CTWF 2011 Motivation Joint International Training Workshop on “Regional Climate Change and Its Impact Assessment” September 26-29, Beijing, China • Main Goal of the CTWF 2011 • Reinforce the scientific capacity related with climate change research among young research fellows from developing Countries. • Provide linkages among the developing countries, in general, and participating institutions in particular to share their experiences in the impact assessment of regional climate change, and local experiences on the management and adaptation methodology for regional climate and environmental change.

CTWF 2011 Sponsors Organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) Co-sponsors United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA) Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), CAS International Center for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES) • CAS provides annual funding of 300,000 CNY (around 46,000 USD), • COMSATS, together with UNESCO provides a 12,000 USD funding support for CTWF participants in 2011.

CTWF 2011 Sessions • The CTWF 2011 international training workshop will cover four sessions, with lecturers and participants from China and abroad. • Facts of regional climate changes and the detection techniques • Impact of climate change on regional water resources • Impact of climate change on agriculture and ecosystem • Regional Climate Model and its applications for climate change studies

  7. CTWF 2011 Venue Beijing Friendship Hotel Beijing Friendship hotel is in No. 1 South St. of Zhong Guan Cun in Haidian District, the central area of Zhong Guan Cun High-tech Garden. There are some famous site scene like Summer Palace, Winter Palace and Xiangshan, around this area, along with some well-known universities including Beijing University and Tsinghua University. As the largest garden hotel in Asia, Beijing Friendship Hotel is recorded into World Architecture Annals published by Cambridge in UK for its large area and typical folk style.

Besides the construction of its own websites, CTWF also posted up the announcements through international organizations like COMSATS, TWAS regional office, etc.. CTWF 2011 Participants • Young research scientists who are interested and/or active in climate science, especially in the field of Regional Climate Change and Its Impact Assessment are welcome to join CTWF 2011. • Funds are available to partially or fully support selected participants. Participants could apply for financial support by apply to the committee. • Participants will be finally selected through the CV, or/and the abstract they submitted to the workshop by the scientific committee of the training workshop, along with the financial support category.

CTWF 2011 Participants International Participants: • Until now, Over 16 applicants from developing countries conveyed their willingness to join the CTWF 2011, within which, 10 have submitted their abstracts to the CTWF 2011 committee. • From 10 countries, Namely Thailand, Senegal, Nepal, Ghana, Iran, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Pakistan, Malysia, Brazil (status as of July 18th) • The CTWF secretariat has extended meeting announcement and invitations to young research scientists from more developing countries, including Vietnam, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Colombia etc..

CTWF 2011 Participants Domestic Participants: • Until now, Over 20 domestic applicants conveyed their willingness to join the CTWF 2011. • Mainly from domestic universities, research institutions and provincial meteorological administration, e.g: • Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology • Institute of Geographic Science and Natural Resource Research, CAS • Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS • Beijing Normal University Total expected participants: 40

CTWF 2011 Participants Lecturers: • Around 10 lectures have been invited to give talks on the related topics, including: • Prof. SARR Abdoulaye, from National Meteorological Agency of Senegal (ANAMS), Lead author of IPCC AR4 report • Dr. Xunqiang Bi, Earth System Physics section, ICTP, TWAS, who is in charge of maintaining ICTP regional climate model • Prof. Tan Qiu Hong, from Institute of Geographic Science and Natural Resource Research • Prof. Ren Guoyu, from CMA, who is the expert on the detection of past climate change over China • Prof. Xiaodong Zeng, from ICCES/IAP, who is the TWAS Young Affiliate, and expert on ecosystem modelling • ……
