Why create strategic priorities for UNDG? • Urgent need for UNDG to support national partners accelerate progress on MDGs/IADGs and other major global challenges • Feedback from field that UNDG too focused on producing policy guidance • Need for greater clarity on UNDG top priorities to facilitate a step change in the quality and impact of UN support at the country level • UNDG Chair requested in December 2009 recommendations on strategic priorities through end of TCPR

UNDG strategic priorities for 2010-2011 • Endorsed by the Advisory Group Principals on 8 April 2010 • Endorsed by the full UNDG on 4 May 2010 Overarching goal: Maximize UNDG impact at country level by helping national partners accelerate MDG/IADG achievement How? • Country level: Resident Coordinators and UN Country Teams drive impact • Regional and global levels: UNDG leaders drive key UNDG system changes to support enhanced country-level impact

Country-level strategic priorities RC-led UNCTs drive impact through: • Stronger “upstream” engagement with national partners • Tighter internal discipline in priority setting • More effective capacity development • Stronger focus on harmonizing business practices Key entry points: • UNDAF rollouts • Crisis/transition planning and coordination • Delivering as One Pilots

Key drivers at regional and global level UNDG leaders drive key UNDG system changes to increase country-level impact through: • Increase agency incentives and supports for country-level coherence and results • Deepen senior leadership engagement with Regional UNDG Teams and RC-led UNCTs • Improve system capacity to deploy knowledge and know-how

Roles and responsibilities to support implementation of strategic priorities Country level: RCs and UNCTs support national partners to achieve agreed development results aligned with national priorities. Responsible for driving implementation with support form other levels of the UNDG Regional level: Regional UNDG Teams provide leadership to ensure the implementation of the strategic priorities Headquarters level: UNDG, its Advisory Group and DOCO support implementation of the strategic priorities

UNDG Work Plan for 2010-2011 Three key work plan Outcomes • Accelerated national achievement of MDGs and IADGs • Strengthened UN coherence and coordination at the country level • UN system effectively deploys knowledge and know-how Roles and responsibilities separately outlined • UNCTs, Regional UNDGs Global UNDGs and DOCO
