Label the second column, What I want to know about eating disorders. Then, record everything you know about eating disorders in the first column. Write at least two questions you have about eating disorders in the second column.

  4. Chapter 4 Lesson 4 Eating Disorders Unhealthy Eating Behaviors • Types of Unhealthy Eating BehaviorsPeople may skip meals, eat only certain foods, or eat large amounts of food at one time. They may also use diet pills or follow unhealthy diets. These types of eating habits are called unhealthy eating behaviors and can be very harmful.

Chapter 4 Lesson 4 Eating Disorders Fad Diets • A fad diet is an eating plan that promises quick weight loss with very little effort. • Fad diets usually require you to buy special products from the company selling the diet. These products can range from pills to special drinks or powdered shakes. Fad diets can be dangerous. • Many fad diets require you to eat in unhealthy ways.

  8. Chapter 4 Lesson 4 Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa • What Is Anorexia Nervosa?Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that includes self-starvation, an unhealthy body image, and extreme weight loss. People who develop anorexia nervosa also suffer from low self-esteem.

  9. Chapter 4 Lesson 4 Eating Disorders Bulimia Nervosa • What Is Bulimia Nervosa?Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder in which a person eats a large amount of food and then tries to rid his or her body of the food.

Chapter 4 Lesson 4 Eating Disorders Binge Eating • What Is Binge Eating Disorder?Binge eating disorder is a disease in which a person has difficulty controlling how much he or she eats but does not purge. In many cases, a person who has this disease suffers from depression as well. People who suffer from this disease usually become very overweight.

  11. Chapter 4 Lesson 4 Eating Disorders Giving and Getting Help • Turn to a Trusted AdultIf you think you or a friend may have an eating disorder, it is very important that you tell a parent or another trusted adult about your feelings. Also, be honest with your friend about your concerns.
