  3. Introduction Columbus's legacy is one of murder and theft and is not worthy of memorializing. He was responsible for the death of thousands of Native Americans. He also treated them inhumanly and humiliated them.

  4. Was Columbus a good person? (article 1) • He was responsible for widespread genocide. He let his crew rape,kill,mutilated,and enslaved native people. • He let his crew rape the native American's. • They killed them. • They mutilated them. • They also enslaved them. Malik belvin kid king

(article 1) • Steals land from the native American's • He was greedy and he only voyaged for three things: gold ,glory , and god • He literally destroyed a whole population and its culture, religion, and traditions • He tried too convert the natives • He’s convinced that he discovered land that people were already living on Manuel Silva

Why do we celebrate Columbus day (article 2) • Cristopher didn’t discover America but “arrived there”. • Leif Ericson found it 500 years earlier. • Some believe the Phoenician sailors crossed earlier than that. • He also didn’t prove the earth was round, a Greek mythologist didfirst. Why do we celebrate Columbus day (article 2) • While Cristopher was in the Americas Spanish authorities saw the brutal treatment of the natives. • He was then sent in shackles along with his two brothers to jail for six weeks. • King Ferdinand released them but Cristopher was stripped of his title of governor. Interactions with the natives (article 3) • When the “Santa Maria” was shipwrecked, the Lucayan natives worked for hours to rescue the ship, saving the crew and cargo. • He then took twenty five lucayan natives back home, only seven survived. • Columbus went to Spain and came back to the new world with 1,500 men, swords, crossbows, and canons. • He asked for his men gold, food, and allow the them to have sex with their women. • When the lucayans refused, they would have their ears and noses to be cut off to serve as a warning.   9. Interactions with the natives (article 3) • Eventually the natives rebelled against them • Columbus saw that as a perfect excuse to go to war. The natives were quickly slaughtered. • Columbus didn’t have the gold he wanted so he took 500 lucayan natives back o Spain to be sold as slaves. Only 300 survived the trip. • Another 500 natives were enslaved in the new world. They were forced to feed, care for, and even carry Columbus's men on their backs • He still didn’t have gold so he set up a tribute system. Those who brought gold would be given a token around their neck so they don’t have to work for a few months. • Those who didn’t bring the gold were punished by getting their hand cut off and forced to wear it.
