  1. 5thGrade TEKS Identify fourteen bones anddescribe the structure and function of the muscular and skeletal system as they relate to physical performance such as muscles pull on bones to cause movement, muscles work in pairs, and muscles work by contracting and relaxing. (5.4E) Skeletal System

  2. 5thGrade • What is the purpose of the skeletal system? • What would happen if you did not have a skeletal system?

  3. Joint – where two bones meet Bones – bonesare hard and support the body Tendon – connects muscle to bone

  4. Skeletal System 5th Grade Start!!!

  5. What is the skeletal system? The skeletal system is all of the bones of our body that give us our shape.

  6. Why is the skeletal system important? • Our bones are important because they give our body structure and they protect important organs like our heart, lungs, and brain. What would our bodies be like if we did not have a skeletal system?

  7. How are bones and muscles different? Muscles Bones Bones are stiff and strong and cannot bend. Muscles are connected to bones and help them move.

  8. Tendons Muscle Muscles are connected to bones by tendons.

  9. SKULL Your Head and Skull • The skull is the bone that protects our brain and gives our head its shape.

  10. The Torso Clavicle • The ribs are a set of bones that protect our heart and lungs. • Your ribs get extra support from the sternum. • Your collar bone is called your clavicle. Sternum Ribs

  11. The Spine and Vertebrae • Vertebrae are the small bones that make up our spine, or back bone.

  12. Pelvis • The pelvis is a large bony structure that connects our upper body with our lower body. Upper body Pelvis Lower body

  13. If bones can’t bend, then why does our body bend? Our body can bend in places like our elbows, fingers, and knees because those are called joints. A joint is the place where two bones meet and muscles hold them together and help them bend.

  14. A special bone To keep your knee joint safe, it is covered by the patella, or knee cap. Your patella protects the muscles that help your knee bend.

  15. Humerus Big bones!!! Femur • Your femur is the biggest bone in your body. It is the top part of your leg. • Your humerus is the top part of your arm. It connects your shoulder to your elbow.

  16. Tibia and Fibula Fractures The tibia and fibula are bones in our lower leg.

  17. Ulna and Radius Radius is on the same side as our thumb. Ulna is on the same side as our pinky.

  18. Phalanges • Phalanges are the very small bones that make up our fingers. Phalanges

  19. 8. Where are the bones you’ve learned? 9. 1. 10. 2. 11. (back of the body) 3. 4. 12. 5. 13. 6. 14. (front lower leg bone) 7. (side lower leg bone) Skull Ribs Patella Femur Humerus Tibia Fibula Sternum Pelvis Clavicle Phalanges Vertebrae Radius Ulna Teacher Note: Advance to the next slide for essential questions and word bank

  20. What problems could occur with the skeletal system? Scoliosis – spine curves too much Fractures – occur when a bone snaps, shatters, or cracks Osteoporosis – bones become thin, spongy, and brittle Bones growing too fast Growing pains http://healingtouch.areavoices.com/files/2012/11/Scoliosis.jpg Arthritis - the inflammation of a joint, and people who have it experience swelling, warmth, pain, and often have trouble moving Information taken from: http://kidshealth.org/parent/general/body_basics/bones_muscles_joints.html#
