What are the consequences of ozone depletion? • Most serious effect of ozone depletion is that the ultraviolet radiation coming from the suncan reach the surface of earth. • It can cause cancer of skin. • More cataractor even blindness. • Suppression of human immune system. • Degradation of paint and plastics (Loss 2.5 billion US$/year in USA alone). • Reduction of chlorophyll in plants, lower yield of crops (Loss 2 billion US$/year in USA alone). • Other ecological disturbances.

Ozone depleting potential (ODP) • The relative ability of a substance to deplete the ozone layer is called its Ozone depletion potential(ODP). • Chlorine containing refrigerantsCFC-11 and CFC-12 have highest (worst) Ozone depletion potential value (ODP=1). • Table on next slide shows the ozone depleting potential (ODP) of common refrigerants.

Ozone depleting potential (ODP) • From the table on previous slide, it can be observed that less the value of the ODP better the refrigerant is for the ozone layer and the environment. • HCFCrefrigerants have a relatively low Ozone depletion potential value. • HFC do not cause any ozone depletion, their ozone depletion potential value (ODP=0).
