  10. Rising Quality Indicators • Average 10-year completion rate for doctoral students increased from 61.8% in 2012 to 62.9% in 2013. National average is 56.6%.   • Median doctoral TTD dropped from 5.76 years in 2012 to 5.3 years in 2013. • As reported by NSF, UMD ranks 2nd among AAU institutions in African American graduates for the 2008-2012. (U Michigan is 1st with 145 graduates; UMD is 2nd with 128.) • As reported by Diverse Issues in Higher Education, UMD ranks 1st among AAU institutions in African American doctoral graduates in 2013.

McNair Graduate Fellowships: year four • Preparing URM Students at USG for Graduate Studies: year two • Graduate Preview Day, October 29, 2014 • Conference on Fisher v. U of Texas at Austin (April 2, 2014)

International Initiatives • UMD/UT Joint International Project in Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, and Bioscience: 20 scientists plus students • UMD/UCC Joint Graduate Seminar and Research Project on Frederick Douglass (Spring 2014) • UMD/Chilean Universities Joint Graduate Seminar and Research Project on Literature and Memory (Fall 2014) • Universitas 21 – global network of research universities (Deans of GSs meeting in Chile in April 2014) • Proposal to Argentine Ministry of Education for joint STEM research initiatives with Argentine universities • Trips scheduled for Spring 2014: Chile, Hong Kong, Taipei, Macao • International Interns (Denmark and Andean Countries) • International Graduate Research Fellowships (IGRF)--20 students from 5 colleges (more pending) • International Conference Student Support Awards (ICSSA)—292 students from 11 colleges • Graduate School Tax Preparation Assistance Program: 412 students in person and 1,094 students on line—784 with average refund of $714 (Spring 2013)

Communications Goals • Enhance reciprocal extramural and intramural communication • Develop comprehensive strategy with clear brand and unified look and voice Means • Hire communications officer • Optimize status of GS as its own “beat” in UR • Develop new website, social media, electronic, and print presences • Create and maintain website as locus for communication and conversation

Development Goals • Build endowment for graduate fellowships commensurate with ambitions • Engage in and promote robust fund raising among alumni and other donors • Focus on both campus and college fellowships Means • Establish GS Office for Development and Alumni Relations • Succeed 20% Development Officer with full-time DO • Create matching incentive programs for endowments • Ensure that graduate fellowships are a central goal of next capital campaign

Student Success: Graduate Writing • Graduate School Writing Center – 5100B McKeldin Library • Writing Fellows for individual tutoring (12-15 fellows) • Peer Writing Groups (Native Speakers) • Facilitated Language Learner Peer Writing Groups (ESL) • English Editing for International Graduate Students Program (EEIGS) • Discipline-specific writing and research workshops • Writing work groups • Create pyramidal structure for graduate writing initiatives

  16. Student Success: TA Training • Office for Graduate Teaching and Learning in GS • Graduate Council Working Group on TA Training • Ongoing collaboration with CTE and Teaching and Learning Transformation Center • Develop pyramidal structure for TA Training

Student Success: Multiple Career Paths • Career paths for PhD extend beyond the academy • Trainees prepared well for the academy, not for other career paths • Provide awareness of various career opportunities • Provide insight on applying to and interviewing for non-academic careers • Provide tools for success in the first years of any career • Engage faculty mentors and help them to help students • Graduate Council Working Group on multiple career paths • Develop pyramidal structure for multiple career paths

Evolving Doctoral Degrees • Lead in imagining doctoral education for an evolving academy, for expanding career options, and for rapidly changing national and international circumstances • International opportunities • Preparation for multiple career paths • Rethink research and professional doctoral degrees • Curriculum, qualifying exams, and dissertation in fields with low completion rates, lengthy time • to degree, and lack of academic career opportunities • Professional doctoral degrees and perhaps unified sequence of professional graduate certificates, masters degrees, and doctoral degrees • New models for research and professional doctoral degrees for post-industrial, post-modern, global culture of the future • White paper in Graduate Council and report to President Loh

Financial Literacy Workshops • Financial Literacy Workshops for Graduate Students • Inaugural workshop held November 23, 2013 • Two hours, seven speakers, 75 attendees • Next workshops held every Friday in April 2014. Location and times TBD. • Producing video of Financial Literacy Workshops for GS website • Available Summer 2014 to all graduate students

New Student Orientation Orientation week: GS New Student Orientation, program orientations, Student Life Graduate Student Kickoff GS New Student Orientation, August 25, 2014, 9:30 am – 1 pm, Colony Ballroom, SSU Outdoor barbeque tentatively scheduled to follow Program orientations should be scheduled accordingly
