  1. Unit 4 Climate Part I The hydrologic cycle

  2. The Hydrologic cycle • This is also called the water cycle • It is the recycling of the water between the oceans, land and atmosphere • There are 6 main parts to the water or hydrologic cycle.

  3. Part of the Hydrologic cycle • Solar Radiation- the sun, the source of energy need for the water cycle • Condensation –is the process by which water transitions from a gas (or vapor) phase into a liquid phase ( cloud) • Precipitation- returns water to the Earth in the form of snow, rain, sleet, hail • Evaporation- returns water to the atmosphere in the form a gas • Transpiration- is the evaporation of water from vegetation • Water storage- place on the earth that water is stored until it is re-evaporated into the atmosphere (lakes, oceans, ice caps) • Infiltration- is water soaking into the ground • Runoff- water flowing along the surface of the earth

  4. The Water cycle co

  5. More hydrologic cycle • The Earth has a LIMITED supply of water Once we harm the water bad enough we are not able to use it. • Approximately 70-75% of the Earth is covered with water ( salt). • The amount of water that seeps into the ground or runs-along the surface is influenced by: • Climate • Slope • Soil type • Rock type • Vegetation • Land use and degree of saturation

  6. Why does run-off occur? • Run- off occurs when: • The ground is saturated • The slope is too great • It is to cold , the ground if frozen • When there has been a lot of rain

  7. Ground water • Ground water is water that is found below the ground • Ground water is filtered as it moved through the rock and soil.

  8. Groundwater Zones • Zone of Aeration -upper soil layers that hold both air and water.. • Zone of saturation- layer of soil below the water table where the ground is saturated with water • Water table- The level below which the ground is saturated with water. • Impermeable layer- a layer of solid material, such as rock or clay, which does not allow water to pass through..-

  9. Water cycle project • Choose either the picture of the water cycle or the groundwater zone • On pasteboard draw a picture of what you have chosen. • Label and define each of the important parts
