  3. World War I Begins • June 28, 1914 - Archduke France Ferdinand killed • July 28, 1914 - Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia • August 1, 1914 - Germany declared war on Russia

  4. 1915 - Lusitania attacked

  5. Sinking of the Lusitania • German U-boat sank the Lusitania on May 7, 1915 • 1,198 people drowned • 128 were Americans

  6. 1916 - Wilson for President • President Wilson was again elected president • His campaign slogan was “He kept us out of war” • He promised to keep the country out of the war

  7. 1917 - United States • Early 1917 – German U-boats sank three American merchant ships • April 6, 1917 - the United States entered the war • June 5, 1917 - ten million men registered for the war

  8. 1918 - War Ends

  9. 1918 - End of the War • 65 million men fought in the war • over 8 million men were killed • 9 million civilians died from: • starvation • disease • artillery fire • air raids

  10. 1919 - Treaty of Versailles • June 28, 1919 - Treaty of Versailles was signed • Treaty of Versailles officially ends the war • The United States did not join
