  1. Sustainability

  2. What Does It Mean To Be Sustainable? • An environment in which organisms can survive indefinitely.

  3. What Does The Science of Ecology Study ? • The study of organisms and their interactions with their environment (biotic and abiotic factors) which determine distribution and abundance of the organisms.

  4. Distribution is • The area a species inhabits Grizzly Bear distribution

  5. Abundance is • The amount or number of a species The number of grizzly bears in Yellowstone NP

  6. The Environment is • Surroundings of an organism with with which it interacts (includes biotic and abiotic factors)

  7. What are Biotic and Abiotic Factors? • Biotic factors = living or once living • Abiotic factors = nonliving

  8. Niche verses Habitat Introduction to Habitat and Niche url:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L6N2diE8jc • Niche = the role of an organism • Habitat = an organism's home/address

  9. Sunflower Niche • The ecological niche involves both the place where an organism lives and the roles that an organism does in its habitat. For example, the ecological niche of a sunflower growing in the backyard includes absorbing light, water and nutrients (for photosynthesis), providing shelter and food for other organisms (e.g. bees, ants, etc.), and giving off oxygen into the atmosphere.

  10. What are Species? • Species = a group of the same organisms that are able to reproduce naturally to produce fertile young

  11. Levels of Ecological Organization • Population= organisms of a particular species, living in a geographic area • Community = a collection of populations of different species, interacting with one another • Ecosystem= an interacting system that consists of both biotic and abiotic factors (i.e. pond, forest) • Biome= a large geographical area with a particular climate (i.e. deciduous forest) What Is An Ecosystem? url:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3CZFfyed3M

  12. Name The Ecosystem. Identify it's biotic and abiotic factors.
