Introduction • Effectual science education requires both learning science concepts and developing scientific thinking skills. • Teachers rely on various methods of teaching science. • The activities we chose are: • appropriate in general, for the specific grade level and also for the students with exceptionalities in our classroom. • effective in helping students to learn a scientific concept beside keeping them motivated, curious and engaged in the process of their learning.

  3. Classroom Setting Students: • 28 students, Grade 4 • 15 students have an IEP; they function at the grade three level. • 1 child with autism who has mild communication problems; he is tactile and very artistic. Technologies available: • 4 desktop computers all connected to the Internet. • A lab with 30 computers. The class is assigned two periods a week to use the lab. • All the students have computers at home.

Instructional strategies: • Indirect instruction • Interactive instruction • Cooperative learning Instructional methods: • Assisted research (WikiSpaces using WebQuest format) • Guided and assisted retelling

Rationale for the use of technology • Why use technology to learn about the senses? • Allows students to develop internet search skills in a controlled environment • Allows students to control own learning • More interesting! • How will the use of technology enhance learning? • Guided search through the use of WebQuest structured Wikispaces page • Offering links and options that they can choose from • Pictures, dynamic web sites, movies
