  4. China Education System (Overview) • National education budget: 3.48% of GDP (2008) • Literacy rate: 92% • Men: 96% • Women: 88% • Compulsory education: 9 years program • Mostly examination-oriented education

  8. National Higher Education Entrance Examination • The enrolment of a university is based on total mark, which varies in different province • Gross enrolment ratio: 59.3% (2008) 5.99 Million out of 10.50 Million candidates • Very competitive to get in a good university

Study in CS (General) • Bachelor: 4 years, Master: 2 years • Undergraduate programs (200 credits) • Computer Science & Technology • Information Security • Tuition: 5000 RMB / year (scholarship) • Marks are important! Not enough practicing • High workload • Respect greatly professors and teachers, not like to question

  29. Study in CS (Courses) • Credits based (16 class hours per credit) • Not much freedom to choose until junior • Content similar, but almost in Chinese • Usually associated with a lot of assignments • Assignments will be marked and returned

  30. Study in CS (Exams) • No oral exam • 90 minutes or so, more questions than here • Marks usually in 100-point scale • Marks published in student ID

  31. Life in HUST • University as a “city” • Dining halls supply food from breakfast to supper • Fee for dormitory: 1200 RMB / year • Four people share a room • Spare time: plenty of activities • Sports • Clubs • Movies • Parties
