  2. Early Attempts to Organize The Elements All attempts were based upon the physical or chemical properties of the elements Most information was observational Very basic attempts that led to nothing that was organized or usable by chemists

Dmitri Mendeleev “The Father of the Periodic Table” Develops a table around 1869 He places elements into a table with basic groups and periods Saw the correlation between masses of the elements and their individual properties Arranges the elements by masses Did not place all of the elements into correct order 

  4. Henry Moseley “Creator of the modern table” Early 19 hundreds Organizes the modern table that we use today Uses X-Ray crystallography to determine the atomic structure of the elements Places the elements into groups and periods based upon atomic numbers (# of protons) The elements in groups have common properties The elements in periods (1-7) have electrons in the same highest energy level

States that the properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers When placed into the table, the elements are in groups w/each other because they have similar properties Elements are in periods because they have outermost electrons in the same energy level (1-7) All new elements must follow periodic law
