The situation 1991 • Mostly a tradition of apprenticeship research training • Small programs – if one could talk of programs • The tradition from Wilhelm von Humboldt – research education the central function of the university • The professionalization of research in many areas – research based professions EDAMBA-EIASM Doctoral Consortium 2013

  4. • The function mainly the supply of academics to academic institutions • Some conditions for the existence of doctoral education: • a tradition of written (not only oral) examinations • a tradition where students write the thesis • research at the university and an organization with disciplines or specialities • a locus for research: departments, seminars, gradudate schools EDAMBA-EIASM Doctoral Consortium 2013
