Korea experienced profound changes during World War II, being occupied by Japan since 1910. Many Koreans were forced into labor battalions, and women became "comfort women" for the Japanese military. As an Axis power, Korea's armed forces were largely decimated as the war progressed. Japanese occupation industrialized Korea, prioritizing military needs. After Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, Soviet and US forces occupied Korea, leading to its division along the 38th parallel, cementing a divide between Communist and Capitalist ideologies that continues to influence the Korean peninsula today.
