  3. Definition of Fascism • Fascism: is a political movement that promotes an extreme form of nationalism and militarism. • It is an authoritarian form of government that places the good of the nation above all else. • Fascists envision an aggressive state ruled by a dictator.

  4. Similarities between Fascism and Communism • Single party rule • The state is more important than the individual • No democracy or free electionsallowed • Both are totalitarianforms of government

Post War Problems • Economic and political problems placed enormous strain on countries after WW I • These problems led to social tensions and an acceptance of radical and extremist ideas • Communists gloated that capitalism had failed • Right wing extremists (Fascists) played on the themes of: • extreme nationalism • failure of democracy • virtues of authoritarian (1 person) rule • need to rearm the military

Satisfied vs. Dissatisfied Countries • The treaty divided the countries into 2 groups • Satisfied: These countries dedicated the terms as the Big 3 • France, Great Britain, USA • Dissatisfied: The former Allieswho felt betrayed (loss of land) or those excludedby the settlement • Former Allies: Soviet Union, Italy, Japan • Germany was forced to accept war guilt and pay large reparationpayments, which put the country in economic ruin.

New Alliances Formed • The dissatisfied countries of Italy, Germany and Japan formed the Rome-Berlin-TokyoAxis Pact • They would fight Soviet Communism • Agreed not to interfere with one another’s plan for expansion • August 1939, Hitler and Stalin agree to the secret Nazi-Soviet Pact • Agreed not to fight if the other went to war • They would divide up Poland and other parts of EasternEurope

  13. Appeasement • The western democracies (France, Great Britain, U.S.) adopted the policy of appeasement in reaction to the aggressive actions of the dictators • Appeasement: giving in to the demands of an aggressor to keep the peace
