  1. Matthew 19: 3-5 ESV 3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?

  2. Matthew 19: 6, 9 ESV 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate . . . 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”

  3. 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 ESV 10 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should not separate from her husband 11 (but if she does, she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not divorce his wife.

  4. 1 Corinthians 7:12-13 ESV 12 To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. 13 If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him.

  5. 1 Corinthians 7:15-16 ESV 15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace. 16 For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

  6. 1 Corinthians 7:20, 24 ESV 20 Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called . . . 24 So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.

  7. Colossians 3:12-13 ESV 12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kind-ness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

  8. Colossians 3:14-16 ESV 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  9. Colossians 3:16-17 ESV teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  10. Colossians 3:23-25 ESV 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

  11. Marriage is a life-long commitment to work with God at loving one person for His glory.

  12. Give grace from your surplus Take a “No Plan B” approach • Work at making your marriage • “better than new”.
