  2. Take a few minutes to write… • What are your concerns about your new UNM student’s academic life? • What do you wish you knew more about, with respect to classes, professors, and academic support?

  3. What to expect • large campus + large courses = a potentially disorienting environment • The first and second semesters are often a difficult transitionfor students coming out of high school.

  4. ExpectationsWhat faculty expect of students, and what you can do to help Attendance is a minimum requirement; success requires active participation. What you can do Help your family member to realize that their success in college will depend on choices that they make about who they are as a student.

  5. ExpectationsWhat faculty expect of students, and what you can do to help Students are accountable for all information that’s presented to them. What you can do Encourage effective note-taking.

  6. ExpectationsWhat faculty expect of students, and what you can do to help For every hour spent in class, faculty expect 2 to 3 hours devoted to the course outside of class. What you can do Encourage realistic, effective time management and study strategies.

  7. ExpectationsWhat faculty expect of students, and what you can do to help Students are expected to take advantage of resources that are available to them outside of class. What you can do • Encourage your UNM student to know about and use: • Faculty Office Hours • CAPS tutoring • The Advisement Center • The Ethnic Centers • The Libraries • the many, many, other resources available to them!
