  2. LHS Waste Management • Program includes • Hazardous waste • Medical waste • Document Destruction • Solid waste (trash) • DOT/IATA • RECYCLING

  3. LHS Waste Management • This is the volume page • Amount of solid waste generated • 2400 tons =550 lbs/hour • Amount recycling • 2020 tons =461 lbs/hour • Amount of medical waste generated • 442 tons =100 lbs/hour

  4. LHS Waste Management • What do we recycle? • Paper and cardboard • Glass/tin/aluminum • Scrap metal, yard debris and wood • Plastics • #1, #2, #4*, #5, #6, foams • Electronics • Universal wastes like fluorescents and batteries

LHS Waste Management • Other key program features • Use of non profit for sorting • Employs 7-8 challenged workers • Materials from other sites • Blue wrap from hospitals all over Oregon and SW Washington • Plastics from the Providence System • 6 Vet hospitals/materials from the community and employees

  6. LHS Waste Management • So how does this all happen? • Lots and lots of work and communication • In services to all types of groups • Newsletters (weekly to all employees) • Site specific enews • Public folders/shared drives • Site walk through tours • Word of mouth/one on one talking

  8. LHS Waste Management • What Does the future hold? • Better recycling collection • Food composting • Major focus shift to sustainability • More partnering • Internally on more sustainable agriculture • Externally on more collection, both with existing programs * and development of new partners
