Status of WC 8”/20” analysis

This report analyzes the current status of the WC detector, including changes in parameters and bug fixes. The full reconstruction process, including autofit and ring counting, was applied to single particle events. The vertex resolution and PID performance were evaluated for both muons and electrons. Some issues were identified, such as the PID becoming worse for higher energy muons and completely wrong for electrons around 300 MeV. Further checks are needed for the PID, charge pattern for muons, and opening angle for electrons.

  1. Status of WC 8”/20” analysis Kimihiro Okumura (ICRR) 2-Aug-2004 JHF 2km meeting

  2. Current status • Changes from previous report • checked though reconstruction source codes and changed parameters related to PMT diameter • some bug fixed on top/bottom PMT geometry • Full set of reconstruction process (autofit, ringcounting, PID, etc.) were applied for single particle events.

  3. Vertex resolution (muon) autofit 20inch msfit LEFT: absolute distance MIDDLE: distance along Cerenkov direction RIGHT: distance vertical to direction 8inch

  4. Vertex resolution (electron) autofit 20inch msfit LEFT: absolute distance MIDDLE: distance along Cerenkov direction RIGHT: distance vertical to direction 8inch

  5. autofit vertex • Vertex resolution becomes <~ 70cm at most • Some vertex shift was seen for electron ~300 MeV • Resolution slightly better for 8” case absolute

  6. msfit vertex resolution • MSfit vertex is fine (especially for muons)

  7. Ring counting • Ring counting was checked with single particle events • These events should become single-ring • Performance seems to be better for 8” case • Need to be checked again with non-QE events

  8. PID But ... • Muon PID becomes worse for higher energy (6~10% missed for 1.5GeV muons) • For electrons, completely wrong around 300 MeV

  9. PID by pattern and angle • PID performance was checked for pattern and angle separately • for muons, miss-PID probability was worse for charge pattern • for electrons, much affected by opening angle. pattern angle

  10. PID for muons muon 1500MeV • Low-charge events tend to be missed • PID worse for partially-contained events? PID parameter e-like total charge (p.e.)

  11. Summary • Full reconstruction performance of WC detector were checked for 8”/20” case • Vertex fitter and ring counting worked to some extent • PID need to be checked again • charge pattern for muons • opening angle for electron
