  2. OUR GOALS TODAY • Define Stereotypes and Diversity Awareness • Activities to demonstrate how stereotypes and discrimination impact culture • Show how you can actively practice diversity awareness • Complete Survey

SAFE SPACE! • Safe Space • A place where we can appreciate differences • A place where we can be ourselves—no walls • A place where we can express our thoughts and beliefs without judgment • Open-minded • Open, but respectful, language • If you aren’t sure if it is appropriate, think of a different word you could use to express what you want to say • OR ask one of us

Stereotyping • CONCEPT OF STEREOTYPING • Examples: salt, paper (label), 3 diff containers of products • You identify a white substance as ‘salt’ without tasting or smelling • School supplies (a mixture of pens & pencils are labeled as ‘pens’ without knowing it is a pen or pencil) • Specifically identify, not group into ‘school supplies’

  6. What is stereotyping? • Stereotyping is grouping people who appear to have similar qualities/characteristics into one group, and then thinking they will all behave/think in the same way • Ex: All teenagers are loud and obnoxious • Ex: Women are bad drivers • Ex:White people can’t dance

  10. Activity! • Divide class into 5 equal groups • One person is the writer • Butcher paper, tape, markers • DO NOT write the word on your poster • Brainstorm for 5 minutes • writer, put everything down • Discussion

What is Diversity Awareness? • Diversity Awareness means to accept others for who they are. • It is actively being aware of how bias affects those around us. • We can become more aware by not stereotyping or discriminating against others because of: • Age • Gender • Appearance • Sexual Orientation • Ability • Education • Family Background • Skin color • Culture • Family Income • Religion • Other Qualities

  12. Who Am I? • “I am ______ but I’m not _______” • Think of personal examples: • Think of a time when you may have been stereotyped, and how that is not your only identity • ANONYMOUS • Example: “I am a woman, but I’m not a bad driver” • Fill in for yourself:“I am a ______, but I’m not ______”

  13. What can Diversity Awareness do for students at ARHS? • By engaging in diversity awareness at ARHS we can help to make our school atmosphere a safe place to express ourselves. • When students feel safe and discrimination/stereotyping are decreased, in turn bullying may also decrease

  14. What can you do? • What can you do to make the school culture more accepting? • Stand up and speak out—what do you REALLY say? • “Hey, that’s not cool. Can you think of a different way to say what you want?” • “That was pretty hurtful to me, could you find a different word to say that would get your idea across?” What would you say???

  15. WeR The W rld: Embracing Diversity Events to come: Photos-in the cafeteria; listen for announcement Posters Headbands-$$ go to other clubs at ARHS Pledge- Sign the ‘diversity pledge’ when you purchase a headband, or just sign it if you want to participate

Survey! • Directions: • Please fill out the survey to the best of your ability • Your responses are your own, not your neighbor’s • DO NOT put your name on it—keep it anonymous • Only the counselors will see your response • This is NOT a test and will not impact your grade in any way • This is not timed • When you are done, please turn your paper over. I will collect them individually.
