Definitions • Moult – Shed • Matted – Knots, tangled hair • Undercoat – Soft fluffy hair, keeps dog warm • Guard hair – Longer hair, protect undercoat • Whiskers – Special sensory hair • Furnishings – The longer decorative hair on a dog’s ears, body, legs and tail. Also referred to as feathering • Shed – Natures way of eliminating the dog’s dead hair from its coat.

  3. Smooth Coated • Smooth, short coat close to body. Ex/ Boxers, Dobermans

  4. Short Coated • Harsh thick short coat close to body • Ex/Lab, Rottweiler

  5. Combination Coated • Combination of long coat and short smooth coat. Short coat on face and front of legs, longer furnishings on legs and underbody • Ex/ golden retriever, Border collie

  6. Double coated(Heavy coated) Outer harsh guard coat with soft undercoat. A lot of shedding Ex/ German Shepherd, Chow Chow

  7. Silky Coat • Long silky coat as well as short smooth coat • Ex/ English cocker spaniel, Springer Spaniel

  8. Long Coated • Long coats (Drop coat) –Long coat over entire body. Considered non shedding. Need a lot of attention • Ex/ Shih tzu Lhasa Apso

  9. Curly Coated(non-shedding) Soft curly or wavy hair. Do not moult (shed). Ear hair needs to be plucked. Ex/Bichon, Wheaten Poodle

  10. Wire Coats • Soft dense undercoat with wiry guard hairs. • Ex/ most terrier breeds: Border terrier, schnauzer, PBGV, Scottish terrier Giant Schnauzer

  11. Hairless • Entire or most of dog has no hair. Occasional bath Ex/ Chinese crested Mexican Hairless

  12. Corded • Hair hangs in cords. Special Bath Ex/ Puli , Komodor
