  4. Biosynthesis of Alkaloids From Amino acids Alkaloids The true alkaloids are toxic, show a wide range of physiological activity, they are almost invariably basic, they normally contain nitrogen in a heterocyclic ring and they are derived from amino acids. There are also some exception to these rules. The majority of alkaloids are produced from • Amino acids, e.g. ornithine, lysine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, histidine and anthranilic acid. • The remaining alkaloids are derived from the purine nucleus. • Or by the addition of ammomiaor an alkylamine to any one of several terpenoid nuclei or steroidal skeleton. The number of plant alkaloids is legion, the structural diversity is enormous and yet, structural relationships can be discerned between individual alkaloids, particularly between those from the same species or family.
