  3. Structured Approach to Career Planning • Drawing a parallel between: • career decision making & • clinical decision making. • What are the 4 stages of clinical decision making? • Taking a History • Examinations/Investigations • Diagnosis • Treatment Plan • Can you do this backwards?

Krumboltz’s Theory of ‘Planned Happenstance’ • Career indecision can be desirable and sensible as it provides the opportunity to benefit from unplanned events. • Unpredictable social factors, chance events and environmental factors are important influences within a rapidly changing labour market • Krumboltz argues that career ‘management’ should focus on developing the following skills and attitudes: • Curiosity to explore learning opportunities • Persistence to deal with obstacles • Flexibility to address a variety of circumstances and events • Optimism to maximise benefits from unplanned events.
