  4. The Griots Copy ) : • Griots = Storytellers • Very respected, usually elders • Stories explained past empires • Acted scenes out • Proverbs = lessons • Stories = history • Show a lot about African history

  5. West African Epics Copy • Collected in Dausi and Sundiata • Some epics historical fiction • Dausi = Ghana • Sundiata = Mali • Epics are long poems

  6. Proverbs “Talking doesn’t fill the basket on the farm.” This proverb warns people that you actually have to work to get things accomplished. “A hippopotamus can be invisible in dark water.” This proverb reminds people that sometimes there are unforeseen problems that may lie ahead.
