  1. Are you ready for an online course?

  2. What can I expect in my online courses? • Online courses typically should mirror traditional face to face courses as much as possible. • You will be expected to complete weekly activities such as discussion forums, upload files to your instructors (assignments) and take online quizzes and tests. • You will communicate with your instructor using tools such as your student email, Moodle course tools such as email and possibly web conferencing as well. • Course content may consist of video lectures, PowerPoints, Word docs, web links, and more. • Typically online courses require at least one proctored exam (often a final) that must be scheduled with an ECC testing center, approved testing site or online testing service. You’ll want to make sure you communicate with your instructor ahead of time if you have any scheduling issues or questions.

  3. Will your schedule allow you to successfully complete the course? • Do you have enough time each day or week to commit to your online coursework? • Will other time commitments such as jobs or family or other courses prevent you from completing your online coursework? • Time management skills are essential for success in online courses.

  4. Do you have the necessary technology/internet access and computer skills? • Online learning systems mainly rely on web browsers-high end computers are not necessary, you will need a functioning computer. It is wise to avoid relying on a single web browser-switching web browsers can often help you avoid delays if you run into technical issues. • While there is an app available for the online learning system, you may encounter issues using a mobile device alone to fully complete your online courses. Having a desktop or laptop computer will help ensure you can reliably complete your coursework without issues. • How would you describe your internet access? You’ll want to make sure you have reliable internet access to avoid delays and issues when completing your online coursework. • You do not need to have advanced technical skills to complete online courses, but being familiar with your computing devices is necessary. A willingness to adapt and use new technologies is very helpful as well.

  5. Are you motivated? • Are you a self-starter? • Your success in online courses is often dependent on your ability to know what’s due and complete work on time. • Online course activities often have open and close dates that you’ll need to be aware of to complete your coursework on time. The online learning system has a number of tools for you to keep track of what’s do-make sure to utilize these resources. • Contact your instructor or the Moodle Helpdesk as soon as possible if you run into any issues or have questions. • Face to face and online tutoring is available if you need assistance in your courses.
