Food • They ate salmon, seals, and whales. It was said that the salmon were so plentiful you could walk across the river on their backs! One whale could feed a whole village! The northwest Indians also hunted bear, deer, and mountain goats, and gathered wild berries.
Clothing • In summer boys wore nothing! Girls wore skirts made from cedar bark. Often goat hair was woven together with cedar roots to make blankets known as “Chilkat” blankets. Hats were woven from spruce tree roots.
Important Facts • Sometimes totem poles could be up to 50-60 feet tall. Totem poles could be large or small in size. Totem poles were very important to people and having one was an honor. They told about the family and were a way of passing stories down from generation to generation.
