Work! • God’s Work Involved the Creation of the Universe Ps. 8:3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, themoon and the stars, which you have set in place, • God Warns Against Slothful WorkPr. 18:9 One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys. • God Honors Those Who Do Good Work. Pr. 22:29 Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve beforekings; he will not serve before obscure men. • Our Labor is a Gift of God Ec. 3:12-13 I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happyand do good while they live.That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in allhis toil — this is the gift of God.

  5. DEFINITION OF INTERVIEW Any face-to-face contact with anyone who has the authority to hire or supervise a person with your skills.

  6. Before the Interview…. • PREPARE! • PREPARE! • PREPARE!

  7. Interviews • Interview = A meeting with an objective • Employer’s objective is to find the best person for the job • Employer: reviews candidate’s experience and abilities • Can you do the job? (skills, abilitie, qualifications) • Will you do the job? (interest, attitude & motivation) • How will you fit into the organisation? (personality) • You: impress employer and assess position on offer • What does this position offer me? • How does it fit with my career plans? • Congratulations - you have passed the first hurdle • You must prove that you are the most suitable candidate for this position

  8. Prepare…. • In prayer…. • Philippians 4:4-7 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Prepare…… • Review own skills, experiences and qualities • Check CV • Anticipate questions and identify relevant examples • Prepare key selling points • Research organisation • Websites, reports, articles, company literature, etc • Contacts with knowledge of organisation or sector • Relevant articles in the press • Personal visit or telephone call • Research job and occupational area • Job description – or similar • Current issues • Prepare your questions • Practice

  12. BEFORE THE INTERVIEW • Research the employer • Find out what the job responsibilities are • Find out and record where, when, and with whom you will interview with • Prepare a resume

  14. Contents • The elements to include will depend on what you are applying for, …. • incorporate the most relevant information to support your candidacy in your CV. • Know your CV and what you wrote down on your application

Employment history Teaching experience Publications Exhibitions Awards and honors Technical, computer, and language skills Professional licenses and certifications Memberships • Contact information • Undergraduate education • Scholarships • Training • Study abroad • Dissertations • Bibliography • Research experience • Extra curricular activities • References

  16. Cover Letter • Don’t repeat your resume (show personality, curiosity, and an interest in the field you are applying to work in) • Keep it short(Less. Is. More. Three paragraphs/Half a page) • Address Nobody(“Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom It May Concern”. • Send it as a PDF(It can’t be easily tampered with, and you have more control over how it appears on somebody’s screen.)

  17. Never ever, ever use the following phrase“My name is ___, and I am applying for the position as ____”.They already know this, and you’ll sound inexperienced. • Talk about the company • Provide quality evidence of your qualities • Relevant and brief • Contact details • Sign the letter • Neatness/ presentation

  18. If you don’t know the name of the recipient… • Yours faithfully(British usage)used when the recipient is not addressed by name, as in a letter with a “Dear Sir” salutation. • Yours truly (American equivalent)

  19. When you do know the name of the recipient… • Yours sincerely (British). • Sincerely yours. (American) Which words to capitalize… Only the first word is capitalized: • Yours faithfully,Yours sincerely,Sincerely yours,

  22. Be on Time Arriving late is a serious misstep…… Showing up too early could rattle your interview. Show up five to 10 minutes before the appointed time.

  23. Your attire • What the office dress code is…..

  24. Image… • clean-looking professional. • Wear a tie • Put on a wristwatch (you don’t take time for granted.) • Keep a pen in your pocket

  25. Your online image • Some employers look for red flags….facebook, twitter…?

  26. Your appearance… • Visible Tattoos • Pungent Smells • Untraditional Piercings • Chewing Gum • Wild Hair

  27. Your Body language Aim to look comfortable, but not too relaxed. Keep a natural posture, avoid crossing your arms, and absolutely NO fidgeting. Stand and sit up straight. Good posture is a huge sign of confidence and poise

  28. Be Yourself, Be Confident, TRUST GOD! • They’ve called you for an interview because they saw potential in you. Prove them right! • 1Pe. 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. • The Lord will help you through your job interview. Just trust Him, do your best and God will do the rest!

Typical Questions • What experience you have that you feel qualifies you to do this job? • What training or education do you have that has given you the skills to do the work? • Describe some goals you have set for yourself and how you measure your progress. • Why did you leave your previous company? (Never criticize former employers or co-workers.  Think of the most optimistic (and true) reason you can give and leave it at that.  If you've been fired for cause, it's best to reveal that and deal with it here.) • When I follow-up with your previous employers, is there anything you feel one of them may tell me that you'd like to explain? (If you've had a serious problem that was documented, it's best to be forthcoming about it and deal with it in a positive fashion.)

  31. Your Communication Style Mirror the communication style of your interviewer, in terms of tone and pace. Excessive use of: ‘You Know’ , ‘Like’ and ‘um’ Over emphasis on money/rewards Negative attitude – evasive, using excuses

  32. Eye contact • SMILE • Shake hands firmly • Look attentive • Do not cross your arms

  33. Your Preparedness • The history of the business • How old the business is • The types of services the business offers • The hierarchy structure • How many offices/locations the business has • Number of employees • Career progression • The business culture • Competitors • Benefits

  34. Your Enthusiasm Appear excited about the job opportunity Convey your interest in the position.

  35. Your Qualifications Explain your skills and expound on your accomplishments. Employers want concrete examples Identify your skills:  adaptive, transferable, and job-related Present a good “story” Use data - numbers, volume, %, etc.

Emphasize results:  what happened as a result of your skills/efforts? • Link up what you’re good at to how you can help the employer out in this job • De. 33:11 Bless all his skills, O LORD, and be pleased with the work ofhis hands. Smite the loins of those who rise up against him;strike his foes till they rise no more.”

  37. What is the employer looking for? • Job skills and transferable/adaptable skills • Flexibility • Dependability • Teamwork • Productivity • Creative Thinking and Problem Solving • Organizational Skills & Leadership Skills • Communication/Customer Service • Ability to continuously learn

  38. Focus on your strengths!! If you don't have experience……. Potential is more valuable than experience!

Benefits…. • Soft skills training (i.e. communications) • Building self-confidence and a ready-for-work attitude • Conflict resolution training and experienceCBF • Training and experience in interacting with co-workers • Understanding the rewards of initiative • Understanding boundaries and supervision • Evaluation and recommendations as requested to potential employers and authorities

Don’t LIE……. • Exaggerate your strengths. • Making up stories…. • The Referees.. • Dodging questions about your weaknesses like a seasoned politician. • Turn ‘negative’ trait into a positive • Weaknesses are completely unacceptable. • (2 Corinthians 12:5, James 5:16, Romans 3:23-24) and enjoy the love of God who doesn’t require us to sugar-coat our weaknesses in order to be acceptable.

  42. Do not fear…. 2Ti. 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit ofpower, of love and of self-discipline.

  43. Ro. 9:17 “For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”

Closing the Interview • Review your strengths • Ask questions • What is the organizations plan for the next five years, and how does this department fit in? • How will my leadership responsibilities and performance be measured? By whom? • What do you think is the greatest opportunity facing the organization in the near future? The biggest threat? • Can you explain a typical project that I would be working on? What would “a day in the life” of this position look like? • How do you develop your employees and make them better once they start working here? • How are decisions made here? How much is team-based and how much is on the individual? • What performance expectations do you have for a good employee in this position? What would success look like?

  45. After the Interview • It takes time and persistence to reach your goal • Consider every interview a learning experience
