  2. deprivation of education (statistics) • 51% of Pakistanis are deprived of basic education and health. • Between 2000-2004, literacy rates in ages 55-64 was 38%. 45-54 was 46%, 25-34 was 54%, and 15-24 was nearly 57%. • Despite being the third largest English-speaking nation in the world, it still has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world, and the second largest out of school population of 5.1 million children. • As of 2009, Pakistan faces a net primary school attendance of 66% for both genders- way below the world average of 90%. • Low levels of public investment in Education (2.2% of Gross National Product) and the focus of the government on higher education (allowing the rich to reap the benefits) are some main reasons to the deprivation of education.

  3. Gender disparity in education • Primary School Enrolment for males was a high 81%, while females only held a low 67% from 2007-2011. • Secondary School Enrolment for males is 46%, while females only contributed to a mere 32%. • Only 18% of Pakistani women have received 10 or more years of schooling. • Pakistan’s overall Human Development Index only stood at 125 amongst 169 countires. • Pakistan’s gender disparity rates stood at 112 amongst 125 countries. • Pakistan’s rate of human rights violation had them ranked at the second worst throughout the world, scoring 4 out of 5 (with 5 having the highest human rights violation.)

  8. What activists are saying • The bias and prejudices in school textbooks are one of the main reasons for the radicalisation of young people and poor quality of Education in Pakistan, said academics and civil society activists speaking at the conference on ‘Biases in textbooks and education policy’, organised by the National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP). • “The only way we can become a progressive nation is to be an educated nation. We know that the only tool we have against extremism is education and if there is no education, there will be no peace,” said Father Emmanuel Yousaf, a peace activist. • The speakers said that current education and curriculum policy should be reviewed to remove discriminatory teaching materials and practices. Besides imparting knowledge, textbooks and teachers should focus on teaching students universal humanity and responsible citizenship. Religious education should be removed from public schools, or at least minority students should get an equal opportunity to study their own religion. And the role of religious minorities in the creation and development of Pakistan should be incorporated in the syllabus, the speakers said.
