  1. Assimilation By the CCSD District Instructional Coaches A Guided Reading Activity

  2. Content Objectives: CCSS RI1 I can cite strong thorough textual evidence to support my analysis of the text. I can determine where the text leaves matters uncertain. CCSS RI2 I can determine two or more central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text. I can give an objective summary of the text. CCSS RI4 I can determine the figurative, connotative, or technical meaning of words or phrases in a high school text.

  3. Language Objectives: WIDA Standard 1 I can paraphrase statements to propel discussions using sentence frames. CCSS L5b I can analyze nuances in the meaning of words with similar denotations (meanings).

  4. Background

  5. Assimilation Slide 1 What does the author mean by a “damning critique”? What words or phrases could help you determine the meaning of “damning critique”? In 1881 Helen Hunt Jackson produced a damning critique of American Policy towards the Indians which was called "A Century of Dishonor". RI4

  6. Assimilation Slide 2 Although Jackson herself offered no immediate solutions, the detail in her work inspired the Reform movement, What is a reform movement? What is the root or base word of reform? What is implied by the term reform movement? RI4

  7. Assimilation Slide 3 A. What does it mean to be the champion of another person or group of persons? B. Why did the people of the reform movement see themselves as champions of the Native Americans? C. Why were they not champions of Native Americans? “…whose people saw themselves as champions of the Native Americans.” RI1 & RI2

  8. Assimilation Slide 4 Why did people such as Schurtz, see “the Indians as standing in the way of the development of the country…” “Liberals like Schurtz, Secretary of the Interior 1877-1881, saw the Indians as 'standing in the way of the development of the country, (they would) form part of it and (benefit) by it.” RI1

  9. Assimilation Slide 5 What does it mean to be patronizing? Why did the authors consider the attitude of the reformers as patronizing and/or arrogant? Cite textual evidence to support your response. RI1 , RI2 & L6 At best it was patronizing, at worst it was arrogant and gave new opportunities for the land grabbers to get their hands on lands which had been promised to Native Americans, 'as long as the grass shall grow'

  10. Assimilation Slide 6 Is the underlined quote an example of literal language or figurative language? How can you tell the difference? At best it was patronizing, at worst it was arrogant and gave new opportunities for the land grabbers to get their hands on lands which had been promised to Native Americans, 'as long as the grass shall grow' RI1 & RI4

  11. A. Is the underlined quote an example of literal language or figurative language? B. Paraphrase the underlined portion in your own words. C. What can you infer about Pratt’s attitude and beliefs about Native Americans? Assimilation Slide 7 In the words of the reformer Richard Henry Pratt in 1878: 'the Indians...remained...in the enjoyment of their savage life...he is in childish ignorance of the methods and course best to pursue‘ Photograph WIDA Visually supported language. RI1 & RI4

  12. Assimilation Slide 8 A. In this portion of the text, why is the word ‘friends’ in quotation marks? B. What is the author actually saying about the ‘friends’ of the Native Americans? RI4 & L5 Previous 'friends' of the Native Americans had seen the reservation system as the key to solving the Indian 'problem'. Now the reservation system was seen as its cause.

  13. Assimilation Slide 9 What did the authors mean by the Native Americans’ essence? In what ways is a people’s culture part of their essence? Although reformers like Pratt did not see Native Americans as racially inferior their perception of the inferiority of Indian culture amounted to the same thing, since their culture was part of the Native Americans' essence. RI1, RI2, RI4 & L6

  14. Assimilation Slide 10 Paraphrase this portion of the text in your own words. What, exactly, is the author saying about the attitude of reformers like Pratt? Although reformers like Pratt did not see Native Americans as racially inferior their perception of the inferiority of Indian culture amounted to the same thing, since their culture was part of the Native Americans' essence. RI1 & RI2

  15. Assimilation Slide 11 A. Explain what the authors meant by “…suppressing their …culture…” B. Explain what the authors meant by “fragmenting their cohesion…” C. Explain what the authors meant by “integrating them into the…racial melting pot.” RI1 & RI2 The Reform Policy was designed to 'civilize' Native Americans by suppressing their communities and culture, and fragmenting their cohesion, thereby integrating them into the American racial melting pot. (WIDA –Visually supported language).

  16. Assimilation Slide 12 A. What is the difference between education and indoctrination? B. What does the author mean by Protestant white American values instead of their traditional values? RI1,RI2 &RI3 2. Children would be 'educated' -in practice indoctrinated - with the Protestant white American values instead of their traditional values. (WIDA – Visually supported language)

  17. Assimilation Slide 13 Provide an objective summary of this text. Express the essence of this text in one sentence. The basic premise behind the new policy was that traditional Native American culture had no value. If they failed to understand this they would be forced to accept the superior culture of the Whites, and to be integrated into American society as individuals, instead of continuing to retain their separate cultural identity. This became known as 'assimilation'. RI2

  18. Assimilation • In your packet are five reading selections. Write a three to five paragraph argumentative essay in which you defend your position. Cite textual evidence from all five texts to support your argument. Your essay will be scored using the PARCC rubric for expanded writing. Slide 14 Your final assignment is to determine whether or not The (Dawes) Allotment Act 1887 and Assimilationis an accurate description of U.S. Native American policy during the late 1800s.
