  2. Strategic Plan • City has had an Economic Development Strategic Plan since late 1980’s • Updated every 5 years • Significant community input and consultation • Last comprehensive update in 2006 • Annual updates since that time

Advisory Committee • Advisory Committee struck by council to oversee implementation efforts • Terry Landon (Chair) • Mayor Bob Kilger • Councillor Glen Grant • Councillor Elaine McDonald • Todd Bennett • Susan Carter • Jacques Perreault • Chuck Charlebois • Resources: • Mark Boileau • Bob Peters • Ken Bedford • Stephen Alexander

Current Plan • Plan calls for action plans to satisfy six strategies • People First • Improve City’s Profile • Support Diversification and Attract New Investment • Retain and Grow Existing Businesses • Promote and Develop Tourism • Leverage Existing Infrastructure • Action plans to be carried out by a wide variety of organizations

Implementation Efforts • Progress has and continues to be made on all six strategies • City working in partnership with other agencies • Chamber, Tourism, Team Cornwall, EOTB, SVCTA • SDG • OMAFRA, MEDI • Employment Ontario • Service Canada • Strategies and action plans need to be flexible to accommodate changes in economy, community

  6. Priorities Moving Forward • As work on the six strategies and various action plans continues, the Committee has created a document to guide its efforts for the remainder of 2012 • The 2012 priorities are organized and linked to the original six strategies

  7. People First • Work with St. Lawrence College to establish a logistics centre of excellence (1.2) • Work with the College to identify and promote degree granting opportunities (1.2) • Conduct a survey of residents before end of 2012 to determine unemployment rates (1.3 & 1.4) • Work with Job Zone and other community partners to address skill shortages and unemployment (1.3) • Attract new residents, including new Canadians (1.5)

  8. Raise Cornwall’s Profile • Continue marketing the city to attract new investment (2.4)

  9. Market The City • Target the following sectors for investment attraction (3.1) • Commercial retail • Logistics • Food processing • Advanced manufacturing • Tourism attraction development • Public/Private sector offices

  10. Grow Existing and Attract Business • Continue efforts to support local business and entrepreneurship (4.1 & 4.2 & 4.3) • Work with CFDC, EODF and other government agencies to improve opportunities to access capital/dept financing for Cornwall companies (4.5)

  11. Expand Tourism Business • Work with local groups to support major events in the city (5.2 & 5.6) • Explore the opportunity to create a new tourist attraction asset in Cornwall (5.3 & 5.5) • Work with Cornwall & The Counties Tourism to address opportunities related to tourism marketing for the region (5.4) • Work with cultural committee to explore the establishment of a regional arts council and arts centre. (5.5)

  12. Leverage Infrastructure • Work with the Regional Airport Commission to expand the Cornwall regional airport (6.3) • Continue to monitor inter-city transportation to Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. (6.4) •  Meet and work with the land acquisition and waterfront committee to promote waterfront enhancement and development (6.5) •  Work with MTO on improvements to Hwy 138 and Hwy 401 interchanges (6.6)

  13. Looking Forward • The Committee will continue work with area groups and individuals to push forward the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan • The 2012 Strategies and Action Plans will be the focus of our efforts, however we will (as always) remain open to address new issues as they arise
