  2. Why a Combo? • Total number of students in both 4th & 5th grade • Take it as a compliment! • Students have less behavior problems • Students have less intervention needs • More independence/self-starter students • Ability to provide more challenging/”forward march” opportunities!!

Homework • Practice of what was learned in math • Math (nightly – except on test days) – 30 min. max. • Spelling / Vocabulary (www.spellingcity.com; spelling contracts if needed) • Reading and Reading Log ~ minutes per week – Due Thursdays ~ Parent signature required (Wed. nights/Thurs. am’s) • Reports and presentations • Extension Projects

  6. AR – Accelerated Reader • Students have individual reading ranges • Students have individual point goals for each trimester assigned to them. • Quizzes can only be taken at school. Students can take quizzes during library, computers, recess when I’m in the room, or when finished with assignments in class • Their reading ranges and point goals can be found on the inside cover of their planner (sticker) for each trimester.

  7. AR – Home Connect • Link is on TJ webpage and the 4th grade webpage • Allows parents and students to keep track of progress towards AR goal and quizzes taken • Parents can sign up for e-mail notifications of when your child has taken a quiz, and the score on the quiz.

  10. Grading • Piloting electronic standards-based report card • Shift to Common Core • Parent-Teacher conferences (Sign up Genius) • Review work and tests that come home in Red Folder each week

  11. Common Core… • What is “Common Core?” Three key CCSS components: 1. Critical thinking/problem solving skills 2. Deeper understanding 3. Real world application An informational night will be held by Mrs. Contreras to help explain the details of Common Core, our Report Card, and our new grading system. District brochure in your child’s mailbox to come home tomorrow.

  12. Student Expectations • Follow the rules, classroom guidelines, behavior appropriate for learning and allowing others to learn • Complete assignments in time allotted • Quality workmanship • Rested, nourish and appropriately dressed (i.e. PE shoes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday)

  13. Behavior • Positive reinforcement system – • Blue and Yellow Star Slips, Gold Nuggets • Natural Consequences • Red slips with child chosen consequences – teacher approval • General Store/Friday Drawings/School Wide Monthly Drawings/Preferred Activity Time (PAT)

  14. Parent’s Role • Support classroom activities • Schedule appointments outside of school time when possible (or after 2 pm if not possible after school) • Communicate with your child and teacher regularly • Concerns- please put in writing or (Email or note to school) schedule a meeting

  15. Volunteers • We love volunteers! • In class, with students • In class or office prep help • At home help • PTC (Parent Teacher Club) What is you ONE thing you will do with PTC this year?

  16. Field Trips • Gold Bug Mine – 4th Grade • Roseville Rock Rollers – 4th and 5th • Working on another 4th ad 5th local trip - TBA • No overnight trips for 4th • Alliance Redwoods – Oct. 7th – 10th for 5th Graders (Car Wash this Saturday from 9 am – 1 pm)

  17. Lunches and Snacks • Hot lunch – pre-pay when possible. If sending in money, please have students first and last name, and teacher’s name on the envelope • Hot lunch – please send in snacks. 5th graders eat at 12:05; 4th graders eat at 12:25. • Snacks – a little goes a long way. Strive for healthy snacks that will satisfy their tummies. • Please no peanuts/peanut butter in the classroom. *Severe nut allergy this year!

Pick Up • Curbside pick-up on the Adventure Club and MPR sides • Students enter on the driver’s side • Crosswalks when parking across the street! • Early pick-up: Must sign child out in office • Be courteous – please don’t leave your car unattended in or near the loops while you “just run real quick to pick up your child”

  19. Curriculum • Open Court • Marzano • Learning Headquarters and Charlotte Knox • MacMillan McGraw Hill (x2) • Scott Foresman • Library on Wednesdays • Chromebooks in the classroom on Wednesdays and getting ready to schedule another day during the week.

  20. Parent Teacher Club (PTC) • Parents volunteer group to make TJ an amazing environment for your child • Technology • Fundraiser(s) – Walk-A-Thon October 30th This could possibly be the ONLY fundraiser for our school this year if we all pull together. Watch for upcoming information. **PTC Meetings are open to ALL PARENTS. 2nd Wednesday of the month 6:30 – 7:30 pm in the TJ Staff room
