  1. Turn in theme focus pages to tray (Education/Gender) Lesson 54: Honors Starting your essay and stuff. Get out TKAM book, EA 5.2 packet, stuff to write with and on. All missing work turned in by end of the week for HALF CREDIT

  2. Step by Step • Goal is to work through each step in the process of the essay as a primitive “first draft” that is a series of questions answered • Keep all materials…potential extra credit…

  3. Steps 1-5 • Complete steps 1-5 first and have it checked with me • Biggest suggestion: rewrite multiple versions of your thesis statement before settling on one for the time being • Step 1: Theme Topic • Step 2: What is being shown about your topic? • Step 3: Choose Lit Element • Step 4: Why is it all important? • Step 5: Take all the above and turn into your thesis

  4. Step 6 • Find a significant passage in the novel, 2-4 paragraphs, that truly exemplifies your theme • Complete a close reading of this passage, taking notes on significant moments in the passage, What stands out to help argue your thesis, what you can infer from the text on a deeper level

  5. Step 7 (Plus some additives) for Homework • Choose two significant quotes from your longer passage that will be your pieces of evidence for your essay • Fold a separate sheet of paper in half, hot dog style. • Write the quotes at the top of the page on either side of the line • Fill the remaining space—and onto the back—with your beginning COMMENTARY. Why are these quotes important? Reflect on the significance, what they say about your theme and your thesis, and how they contribute to the novel as a whole.

  6. Steps 8-14 • We’ll work on in class some more to hammer down excellent body paragraphs next lesson
