CARMENES – A Radial-Velocity Facility for the Calar Alto 3.5m • Three high-resolution spectrographs fed with fibers from prime focus • Search for terrestrial planets around mid-M dwarfs • Near-IR (0.95 … 1.8 μm) arm optimized for Y band • Simultaneous activity monitoring in the visible • 300 targets, 60 observations each over 5 years • Giant planets around G and K giants, up to 5 M • Multiplexed visible-light spectrograph with 14 fibers • Strong constraints for planet formation theories • 3000 targets in the M star fields • Study completed 09/15/09, awaiting review 2
