  1. Lesson 1-6 Pages 30-33 Algebra: Properties Lesson Check 1-5

  2. What you will learn! How to use addition and multiplication properties to solve problems.

  3. Vocabulary

  4. Commutative Property The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change the answer!

  5. Commutative Property 3 + 7 = 7 + 3 3 x 7 = 7 x 3

  6. Associative Property The way in which three numbers are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change the answer!

  7. Associative Property (2 + 5) + 8 = 2 + (5 + 8) (2 x 5) x 8 = 2 x (5 x 8)

  8. Identity Property The sum of a addend and zero is the addend. The product of a factor and one is the factor.

  9. Identity Property 4 + 0 = 4 9 x 1 = 9

  10. Distributive Property To multiply a sum (or difference) by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parentheses.

  11. Distributive Property 3(4 + 8) = (3 x 4) + (3 x 8)

  12. What you really need to know! The Big Question! Did the numbers move, or did the group change?

  13. Word Bank: Lesson 1-6 Commutative Associative Identity Distributive

  14. Example 1 Name the property shown by each statement. 24 + 5 = 5 + 24 Commutative +

  15. Example 2 Name the property shown by each statement. (11 x 4) x 8 = 11 x (4 x 8) Associative x

  16. Example 3 Use the distributive property to write each expression as an equivalent expression. Then evaluate the expression. 8(5 + 7) 8•5 + 8•7 ; 96

  17. Example 4 Use the distributive property to write each expression as an equivalent expression. Then evaluate the expression. (2 + 9)6 2•6 + 9•6 ; 66

  18. Example 5 Mr. Harmon has budgeted $150 per day for his hotel and meals during his vacation. If he plans to spend six days on vacation, how much will he spend? 6 x 150 ; $900

  19. Example 6 Name the property shown by each statement. 7 = 1 x 7 Identity x

  20. Example 7 Name the property shown by each statement. 7 + 0 = 7 Identity +
