  2. BEFORE THE INTERVIEW • Do your homework on the company! - research, ask, library, internet 2. Know where the place is. 3. Arrive 5-15 mins early.

  3. Before the interview cont. 4. Be prepared. Take copies of C.V., questions, etc. 5. Dress for success!

  4. 2. THE START OF THE INTERVIEW • Inform the secretary that you have an interview: • Whom it is with • The time of the interview

  5. Beginning of interview cont. 2. When you meet the interviewer: • Look straight into his eyes • Shake hands firmly • Introduce yourself • Smile • Be confident AND • Wait until you are offered a seat

  6. 3. Be positive in your communication: • Don’t slouch • Don’t be too bold or too shy. • Let the interviewer lead the interview. • Say that you are happy to have the opportunity to have an interview.

  7. 4. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS: SMILE!

  8. DON’T: • Smoke • Chew gum • Swear • Slouch • Put your hands, items on interviewer’s desk • Fidget with rings, pens, ties, etc.

  9. THE INTERVIEW (MIDDLE) 1. Always face the interviewer with good posture, body language. 2. Stay positive: - attitude 3. Let interviewer know about: • Skills • Knowledge • Experience that make you a qualified candidate.

  10. 4. Know your C.V. well and be prepared to ask questions about them. 5. Don’t be a know-it-all! 6. Be thorough when answering questions. Motivate and explain. Don’t just say “yes” or “no”.

  11. 7. Ask interviewer to explain if you don’t understand the question. 8. Pay close attention to what interviewer saying. 9. Organise your thoughts before speaking.

  12. 10. Watch for illegal questions (age, ethnicity, religion, marital status, race.) 11. Show that you are highly motivated, energetic.

  13. Don’t • Emphasise your weaknesses • Draw attention to negative attributes • Criticise former employers, co-workers, etc. • Discuss personal issues which are irrelevant. • Discuss salary or benefits unless interviewer brings this up first.

  14. 4. THE INTERVIEW (END) • Ask the job-related questions you prepared. What do you do if you are offered the job immediately? - Ask about the specific salary, benefits, work hours. - Ask for a day to think about it

  15. If you are told that you will be contacted: • Ask how long it will be. • Offer to call in a few days to find out the decision. • This shows your continued interest.

  16. Make sure: - The interviewer knows how best to contact you and that you are available for any additional information that may be needed. Thank the person for the interview and their interest. Shake hands firmly on the way out.

  17. THE FOLLOW UP 1. Send the interviewer a thank-you letter soon after the interview. 2. Call the company about a week later to find out whether they have made a decision. If not, find out when they expect to have a decision.

  18. WHY PEOPLE ARE NOT HIRED • Poor personal appearance • Inability to communicate clearly, poor voice, grammar • Lack of planning for a career … no purpose or goals

  19. Cont. • Lack of enthusiasm and confidence in the interview. • Condemning past employers. • Failure to look the interviewer in the eye. • Limp handshake.

  20. Cont. • Late for the interview • Does not thank the interviewer for his/her time. • Asks no questions. • Lack of knowledge about the business/position.
