ISS Library began to develop a project for implementing an intranet site
Agreement with CIBER/CASPUR Consortium for the access to Science Direct data base (600 e-journals)
2001
launch of the intranet site
1.100 online full text journals
2003
2.700 journals (Elsevier, Kluwer, Wiley, Nature PG)
22 data bases (Medline, CA collective index, Embase, EBM) Evolution of a project
5. 5 A survey
A questionnaire containing 6 questions about net services was launched in march 2002
potential target: 2400 users
answers: 562
6. 6 Intranet - Frequency of use QUESTION:
How many times a week you use the intranet services?
	- 3-4 times a week
	- 1-2 times a week
	- less than once a week
	- not used
7. 7 Intranet- Impact in library frequency (percentage of reduction of habitual attendance) QUESTION:

How much do you reduce the library visits after introduction of intranet services?
	- totally
	- 70%
	- 50%
	- 30%
	- no impact
8. 8 Intranet - Use of services QUESTION:
Which are the most used services?
	- catalogues
	- data bases
	- e-journals
	- library accession list
	- useful links
	- whats new
9. 9 Intranet - Services to be increased QUESTION:
	Which services should you increase?
	- data bases
	- e-journals
	- informative pages
10. 10 Intranet - Easiness of use QUESTION:
How do you think access and use of the site are?
	- simply and friendly
	- fairly simple
	- fairly difficult
	- difficult
11. 11 Intranet- Impact of technical aspects QUESTION:
Indicate the impact of technical aspects on the site access?
	- strong impact
	- slight impact
	- no impact
12. 12 Analysis of results 562 returned questionnaires (on a potential target of about 2.400) are a significant test for two reasons:
they show high level of interest about working of library
they provide a wide and reliable sample on users trends and needs
13. 13 Analysis of results (2) Divided data
scientific and research area staff:
	537 answers on a potential of 2.185 (ratio 1 : 4)
administrative area staff:
	19 answers on a potential of 243 (ratio 1 : 10)
significant change in library use
more than 80% of users shift towards remote services (4% with a complete withdrawal of library frequency)

14. 14 Analysis of results (3) Elsevier Web of Science DB statistics
262 titles in paper format
1.400 titles in electronic format

15. 15 Analysis of results (4) Elsevier Web of Science DB statistics of downloaded articles:
2001 :	78,1% from subscribed titles (23740)
			21,9% from unsubscribed titles (6685)
2002 :	76,1% from subscribed titles (32714)
			23,9% from unsubscribed titles (10277)
Growth of 41% between the two years
Growth of 2% between subscribed and unsubscribed
Consultations of paper journals
2000 = 100
2001 < 8%
2002 < 42%

16. 16 Analysis of results (5) Use of services:
e-journals + data bases = more than 2/3 of total access
Services which need to be increased:
more than half of researchers indicate e- journals and 25% data bases
17. 17 Future development strategies 1) Increase in electronic information sources
main difficulties:
costs
overlapping of resources
wide range of interfaces
18. 18 Future development strategies (2) the consortium choice
		pros:
higher bargaining power
sharing resources
a coordinate acquisition policy
		cons:
rigidity of contractual terms
limited possibility of subscription cuts
the use of informative resources with free access
Public Library of Science
Budapest Open Access Initiative
Open Archives Initiative (OAI)
19. 19 Future development strategies (3) 2) The new library-users relationship
libraries and librarians must redefine their roles becoming centres of distribution in remote mode of information
the librarian must undertake the role of expert surfer thus preventing the user from losing himself in the surplus of information offered
20. 20 Future development strategies (4) 3) New tools for new tasks
software that allows a generalized access to various resources through the same interface (OVID, SFX TDNet, etc.)
development of tools concerning remote aid such as a virtual reference desk and a document delivery service by e-mail for articles without direct access
use of specific performance indicators to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of electronic services and user satisfaction level
