  1. Timothy of the Cay : Jamaica Jamaica is a small West Indian island in the Caribbean Sea.

Timothy of the Cay By: Theodore Taylor • Timothy of the Cay is a wonderful story about the time before Timothy’s death and all of Phillip’s memories of Timothy. • Phillip is stranded on an island after a ship was hit by German torpedoes during World War II. • Phillip was blinded when he was hit with a piece of timber.

  3. On the island . . . • Timothy teaches Phillip how to stay alive on the island, which is good because Timothy gets malaria and gets very sick. • Timothy dies, leaving Phillip alone on the island, until he is rescued by attracting the Air Force’s attention with black smoke. A ship takes him back to Curacao, to reunite with his parents.

  4. After rescue . . . • Phillip undergoes surgery that allows him to see again. • Once he recovered he returned to the Cay to pay his last respects to Timothy. • He remembers Timothy’s descriptions, and walks around the island closing his eyes, in order to recognize that this was HIS Cay.

  5. Sugar Cane Sugar cane is a big thing in our world. Most sugar cane comes from Jamaica. You probably know it as sugar, but sugar starts off as sugar cane.

  6. Sugar Cane Slavery Slaves are very important in Jamaica because slaves pick the sugar cane and make it into sugar.

  7. Prejudice/Racism All of his life Phillip has looked down on black people. Timothy made Phillip realize that skin color doesn’t matter.
