Guest Speaker: Arlena Jackson • First year doctoral student with a specialization in international public relations. • Bachelors of Science journalism degree from Florida A&M University. • Master’s in Business Administration from Syracuse University. • Previous work experience: public relations practitioner for IBM Corporation, NASA and most recently Emerson.

  3. Program Assistant for the study abroad trip with the College of Journalism and Communications. They will be traveling to Australia this year. Mrs. Jackson’s goal is to make sure students of color have the opportunity to take these trips. There will be an info meeting on Oct. 16th. Tips from Arlena Jackson - Be conscious of burning bridges. - Always remember to show up. You never know who might be willing to help you. - Have a good portfolio. Save anything positive. If you have an email from a professor highlighting your strengths or a positive review from an employer - save it and put it into your portfolio. - The competition is very stiff, so make sure you do something that sets you apart. Put yourself in a position where you can have a competitive edge. Arlena left a six figure job to come to the University of Florida to pursue her doctoral degree. - We’re always being interviewed. - Employers look at Facebook and Linkedin. Make sure your social media is clean. - Some people write thank you cards in email or a text message. Take the time out to hand write thank you cards and mail them. - Go back to your passion. - “Adversity reveals character.” Arlena stresses to remember that quote from Michelle Obama.

  4. Questions and Answers Q: What is the cost like for the study abroad trip? A: The cost includes credits, hotel and breakfast. The other cost is for airfare. There are ways I can work with you through financial aid. Don’t be discouraged from the fee. I know of funding opportunities, but we have to start early. Q: What do students do on the trip? A: First work in study abroad is study. Student can take classes that will go toward you’re degree. You can take six credits, which is two classes. Students have the chance to immerse themselves in a different culture. Q: What are some concerns that minority students might have? A: A long flight. If you haven’t traveled outside of the United States before, it’s an adjustment. Arlena encourages our members to reach out if they have any questions for her.   6. Sister 2 Sister This Friday October 5th! Ariana Gordon, Assistant Editorof Sister 2 Sister Magazine, will be joining us! At 5:30 p.m. she will meeting one-on-one with members. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a group meeting and the floor will be open for questions! Come prepared with your resumes and any questions you might have about the industry.

  7. Emma Bowen Foundation For Minority Interests In Media The Emma L. Bowen Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create career opportunities in the media industry for minority youth. If selected, you will have the opportunity to work, develop valuable skills, and network with industry professionals each summer until you graduate from college. You will earn a salary, and matching dollars will also be set aside to help pay for your college expenses.   8. CJC Interviewing Day • CJC Interviewing Day is Tuesday, October 9th. • Former UFNABJ member Jamie Harrison will be there with the Florida Hospital Orlando. They’re offering a Marketing/Special Events/Writing Internship to juniors, seniors and grad students. • Opportunity to build your portfolio and gain experience in marketing and public relations in the health care industry. • Her boss is also looking for freelancers for Best in Care magazines, which is a paid opportunity. • If any members are interested, please contact Jamie Harrison at Jamie.Harrison@flhosp.org • Jamie was an UF NABJ member and you are a UF NABJ member. They know this organization and the quality students that it produces. Go up to the table and introduce yourself. Mention UF NABJ.

  10. Treasurers Report Balance: $731.77 Latest Concession Numbers: $181.80 Please turn in dues ($15) and T-Shirt money ($10) as soon as possible. T-Shirts are costing more that $10, so make sure you volunteer to fundraise and pay your dues to help with extra cost.

  12. Upcoming Events/Reminders • News Test: If the National Broadcasting Society is have a meeting about the News Test, we encourage you to attend that. If any members want to email Nickelle Smith for some one-on-one time, please do so. Her email is snickelle2@gmail.com. • Editing Test: 1 hour test on Friday Oct. 26. You can sign up in the journalism office on the 2nd floor by the 24th. There is a paid summer internship if you pass. • Friday Oct. 5 - Ariana Gordon, Assistant Editor of Sister 2 Sister Magazine. Offering internships for Spring and Summer! • Wednesday Oct. 17 - General Body Meeting & Zion content is due! • Stay Tuned for UF NABJ Week! We will have speakers, socials, magazine release party. UF NABJ Week will be at the end of October through the beginning of November.
