  2. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms • Objective: • 7.4.01Collect, organize, analyze, and display data (including box plots and histograms) to solve problems. • Essential Question: • Day 1: How can I use line plots, bar graphs, and histograms to display and analyze data? • Day 2: What are some similarities and differences between a bar graph and histogram?

  3. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Vocabulary: • Line Plot:a graph that shows data on a number line with x or other marks to show frequency. • Bar Graph:a graphic form using bars to make comparisons of statistics. • Histogram:a special kind of bar graph in which the bars are used to represent the frequency of numerical data that have been organized in intervals. • Frequency:the number of pieces of data fall within a given interval or category. • Frequency Table:a table for organizing a set of data that shows the number of pieces of data that fall within given intervals or categories.

  4. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 1:Frequency Tables • Create a frequency table for the following data of favorite student colors: • Green – 5, Blue – 8, Red – 4, Orange – 2, Yellow – 3 • Favorite Color • # of Students • Green • 5 • Blue • 8 • Red • 4 • Orange • 2 • Yellow • 3

  5. (include least value of 20 and the greatest value of 55) Step 2: Draw the frequency table.

  6. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 3:Line Plots • The table below shows the number of minutes each student in a math class spent studying the night before the last math exam. Make a line plot of the data: Step 1: Choose an appropriate interval for the data. (include least value of 32 and the greatest value of 70) Step 2: Draw the number line. Step 3: Plot each data point.

  7. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Country Vacation Days per Year Italy 42 France 37 Germany 35 Brazil 34 U. Kingdom 28 Canada 26 Korea 25 Japan 25 United States 13 Source:The World Almanac Example 4:Bar Graphs • The table below shows the average number of vacation days per year for people in various countries. Make a bar graph to display the data: Step 1: Choose an appropriate interval and scale for the data. (include least value of 25 and the greatest value of 42) Step 2: Draw a bar to represent each category. In this case, a bar represents the number of vacation days per year for each country.

In this case, a bar represents the number of vacation days per year for each country.

  10. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 5:Bar Graphs • The table below shows the average number of miles run each day during training by members of the cross country track team. Make a bar graph to display the data: Step 1: Choose an appropriate interval and scale for the data. (include least value of 5 and the greatest value of 14) Athlete Miles Run Per Day Bob 9 Tamika 12 David 14 Step 2: Draw a bar to represent each category. In this case, a bar represents the number of miles run per day for each athlete. Anne 8 Jonas 5 Hanna 10

  11. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 5:Bar Graphs Step 1: Choose an appropriate interval and scale for the data. (include least value of 5 and the greatest value of 14) Step 2: Draw a bar to represent each category. In this case, a bar represents the number of miles run per day for each athlete. Athlete Miles Run Per Day Bob 9 Tamika 12 David 14 Anne 8 Jonas 5 Hanna 10

  12. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 6:Histograms • The number of wins for the 29 teams of the NBA for the 2000-2001 season have been organized into a frequency table. Make a histogram of the data: Step 1: Draw and label the vertical and horizontal axes and then add a title. # of Wins Frequency 11-20 3 21-30 4 31-40 4 Step 2: Draw a bar to represent the frequency of each interval. 41-50 10 51-60 8

  13. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 6:Histograms Step 1: Draw and label the vertical and horizontal axes and then add a title. Step 2: Draw a bar to represent the frequency of each interval. # of Wins Frequency 11-20 3 21-30 4 31-40 4 41-50 10 51-60 8

  14. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms • Example 7:Histograms • The speeds of cars on a stretch of interstate are clocked by a police officer and have been organized into a frequency table. Make a histogram of the data: Step 1: Draw and label the vertical and horizontal axes and then add a title. Speed in MPH Frequency 50-59 2 60-69 14 70-79 18 Step 2: Draw a bar to represent the frequency of each interval. 80-89 3

  15. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 7:Histograms Step 1: Draw and label the vertical and horizontal axes and then add a title. Step 2: Draw a bar to represent the frequency of each interval. Speed in MPH Frequency 50-59 2 60-69 14 70-79 18 80-89 3
