  3. Reggae • First developed in Jamica in the late 1960s. • Originated from ska and rocksteady • Elements of Calypso, soul and rock

  4. Reggae • Slower than ska, usually has accents on the first and third beat in each bar. • Lyrics: based around religion, love, sexuality, relationships, poverty, injustice and other social /political issues.

  5. Rastafari • “Messianic religio-political movement" • Jamaican slums 1920’s & 30’s • Ritual use of marijuana, avoidance of alcohol, and dreadlocks
