  2. Family – the definition • A group of 2 or more individuals • Biologically or legally related to one another • Living in the same household • Provide for the physical, emotional, and economic needs of its members

  3. The family is a vital institution!!! • Helps maintain society (Structural functionalist view) • Let’s do an activity!!! 

  4. Functions of the Family • Socialization – first and most influential agent of socialization. Parents teach children to become functioning members of society • Regulations of sexual activity – the family shapes the norms of sexual relations • Only appr. sexual partner is spouse • Defines what is considered incest (taboo)

  5. Functions, cont. • Social placement – social identity (race, ethnicity, religion, & social class) ascribed at birth • Material and Emotional security – physical protection, emotional support, and financial assistance

  6. Traditional Families • Heterosexual relationship betw. 2 parents • Married (preferably first marriage) • Children • Division of labor by sex • Father = breadwinner • Mother = homemaker • This form has never predominated!

  7. Postmodern Family • No form of family is best • No pattern of gender division of labor • No one person is left to parent the children – parenting is among many caring others • Greater acceptance of daycare/fathers at home • Both parents may want to have careers
