  3. What is workplace discrimination? • Discrimination in hiring, promotion, job assignment, termination, and compensation based on gender. It also includes various types of harassment.

  4. Effects of Discrimination Women • Lower paying job opportunities • Loss of self-esteem/self-worth • Less flexibility in working hours • Less income for family • Feeling helpless for loved one who is being discriminated against • Loss of family time Men

  6. Dukes v. Wal-Mart • The case started in 2000, when a 54-year-old Wal-Mart worker in California named Betty Dukes filed a sex discrimination claim against her employer. Dukes claims that, despite six years of hard work and excellent performance reviews, she was denied the training she needed to advance to a higher salaried position • The plaintiffs seek to represent 1.6 million women, including women who no longer work for the company • Is the largest job-discrimination class action in history
