  1. NOTEPACK: UNIT 2 – Matter and Change Conceptual Chemistry

  2. Unit 2 Objectives 1) Read and express information given in chemical formulas. 2) Classify matter as a pure substance or a mixture. 3) Distinguish between chemical and physical properties of matter, as well as chemical and physical changes. 4) Balancing chemical equations 5) Describing chemical reactions and calculate percent yield and percent error.

  3. OBJECTIVE 3: Distinguish between chemical and physical properties of matter, as well as chemical and physical changes. • Today we will examine the differences between chemical and physical properties and changes.

  4. Properties of Matter • Physical Properties: Can be measured without changing the substance’s chemical composition. • examples: melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, odor, hardness, color, etc.

  5. Properties of Matter • Chemical Properties: Potential reactivity of substance with other substances. Can only be measured by trying the reactions. • examples: Any particular reaction a substance undergoes.

  6. Changes of Matter • Physical Change • Chemical Change

  7. Physical Change • PHYSICAL CHANGE:Alters a substancewithout changing the substance’s chemical composition. • examples: melting, boiling, cutting, smashing, dissolving

  8. Chemical Change: • CHEMICAL CHANGES:Occur when one or more substances are changed into another substance that have different chemical compositions. • examples: rusting, exploding, decomposing, corroding, food spoiling
