  1. Future of Roads in India

  2. ROADS IN INDIA -SOME FACTS- With a total length of approximately 3.3 million km, India has the second largest road network in the world and it is being developed to 4/6 lane at a rate of nearly 11 km per day, as against only 11.12 km per year or 550 km during the previous 50 years. India is currently implementing the world’s largest infrastructure project

  3. EXISTING ROAD NETWORK Category Length(In Km) National Highways 58,112 State Highways 1,37,119 Major District Roads 4,70,000 Village and Other Roads 26,50,000 Total Length 33,15,231

  4. THE TREND

  5. There has been a major shift in transportation mode from Railways towards the Road sector. Status in the year 1950: Roads Railways Passenger 32% 68% Freight 12% 88% Current Status: Roads Railways Passenger 85% 15% Freight 70% 30%

  6. THE SCOPE FOR DEVELOPMENT ·Primary Network - Only 2 to 3 % ……. 4 - Laned, 15% ……. Single Laned ·Primary/Secondary Network - Severe capacity constraint and lack of mobility ·Tertiary Network - Connectivity an issue - 45 % habitations not connected by all weather roads - Outdated design and construction standards - Use of Old Technology - Poor quality of construction - Neglect of maintenance

  7. THE BOOST • ONGOING PROGRAMMES: • NHDP • PMGSY • PM-BJP • CONNECTIVITY TO PORTS • EXPRESSWAY PROJECTS • As on today road projects worth Rs.1,22,731 Crore are going on

  8. National Highways Development Project (NHDP) • Golden Quadrilateral • North South and East-West corridors • The Golden Quadrilateral and North-South and East-West corridors programs are targeted to be completed by the year 2007.The NHDP has investment of Rs.54,000 crore.

  9. The Rural Road Network • About 45% of the 600,000 villages lack roads suitable to motorized traffic • Existing Rural Road Network • - Length about 1.8 million km • - Major deficiencies and poorly developed • - Mostly deteriorated due to lack of maintenance • - Responsibility: Mostly local government engineering departments and PWDs

  10. Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) The PRADHAN MANTRI GRAM SADAK YOJNA has been launched in December 2000, with the objective of providing connectivity, through good All-weather roads, to all unconnected Habitations, with a population of more than 500 persons, by the 2007. About 1,60,000 Habitations are expected to be covered under this programme, with an anticipated investment of Rs. 60,000 crore.

  11. The Road Development Plan 2001-2021: • Main Features: • 10,000 Km of expressways are proposed to be constructed by the year 2020. • The National Highways are planned to grow to about 75,000 Km (52,000 Km at present) in next 20 years.

  12. Areas for future attention: • With increased passenger travel on the Highways, there would be a need to develop road side amenities. • Improved safety on the roads, through technological inputs in • vehicles, designs and traffic engineering and through education and training. • Encouraging private sector participation and toll roads. • Review road user taxes and charges for raising additional revenue.
