  1. ISAIAH 716 BC Ch 21

  2. Isaiah 21 I Chr. (1:17-27)

  3. Isaiah 21 1The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land. Scholars believe “desert of the sea” is a metaphor for Babylon. It sits in the floodplain of the Euphrates/Tigris Rivers. The “whirlwind” refers to swift attackers. 2A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam: besiege, O Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease. The vision is grievous because everybody though Babylon was invincible. “Treacherous dealers” and “Spoilers” reminds me of a saying we have: “You can trust a communist (to be a communist)”; and another saying of God: 2 Tim 3:13 “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.”

  4. Isaiah 21 Dumah Tema Dedan

  5. Isaiah 21 3Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it. 4My heart panted, fearfulness affrighted me: the night of my pleasure hath he turned into fear unto me. Something about this vision is frightening – (the swiftness, the fury, the devastation?) I.e., if this can happen to Babylon, who is safe anymore?

  6. Isaiah 21 5Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield. 6For thus hath the LORD said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth. 7And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed: 8And he cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights: 9And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground. 10O my threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you. Here it appears there is time to watch, wait and observe. Mixed animals probably signifies multiple kingdoms attacking (Medes and Persians) Is fallen, is fallen = Babylon was conquered by Assyrians in 689 BC and again in 539 BC by Medes & Persians (Belshazzar, Dan 5)

  7. Isaiah 21 11The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night? 12The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come. Dumah was one of the 12 tribes (sons) of Ishmael, whom Arabs claim as their ancestor via Abraham (I Chr 1:28) Dumah is associated with Mt. Seir, which is also near both Edom and Moab In Isaiah 15 we saw what happens to Moab in the middle of the night, so this is a future reference. It also brings Arabia into the picture.

  8. Isaiah 21 13The burden upon Arabia. In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanim. 14The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled. 15For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war. 16For thus hath the LORD said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail: 17And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it. In 689 BC, Sennacherib waxed what there was of Arabia; but it may be that we are being told here that, after the fateful night of Moab, Saudi Arabia, Mecca and all its fame and fortune have only about a year.

  9. Assyria Timeline Four kings of Judah are included: Uzziah (good), Jotham (OK), Ahaz (horrible), and Hezekiah (good) In this segment, we have Hezekiah, who straddled the reigns of Sargon and Sennacherib
