  2. ISAIAH: The book • Relates to the period covered in 2 Kings 16-20 during the reigns of 4 kings of Judah (1:1) • A time of struggle & uncertainty for Israel & Judah: Assyria destroys N. Kingdom & threatens Judah; Babylon’s power is on the rise • Isaiah’s life & ministry cover approx. 742-538 B.C. • Mostly a collection oracles (speeches), but some narrative material (chaps. 6, 36-39)

  3. ISAIAH: The Man • His name = “The Lord Is Salvation” • “Son of Amoz” (not “Amos”) – All we know of his family • Married (8:3) & had 2 sons (7:3, 8:3) • Possibly a member of the royal court or a priest • Jewish tradition says he was sawn in two during reign of Manasseh (see Heb. 11:37)

ISAIAH: Major Characters • The Lord (“The Holy One of Israel”) • Isaiah • Ahaz & Hezekiah – Kings of Judah • Assyria & Babylon – plus other nations who have oppressed Israel • “The Remnant” – those who have been faithful to God & who will be spared His wrath • The “Servant of the Lord” (chaps. 40-55) – Promise of a Redeemer to come

  5. ISAIAH: The Problem • Israel & Judah’s sins have brought God’s wrath • Rebellion against God • Ritualistic Worship w/out corresponding Godliness • Idolatry • God’s judgment is certain, but so is restoration

  6. Isaiah: major events • Isaiah’s Call to Prophesy (6) • Ahaz’s fear & Isaiah’s prophecy of “Immanuel” who is to come (7:14) • Assyria’s (Sennacherib) invasion of Judah & miraculous deliverance (36-37) • Hezekiah’s sickness & recovery (38) • Babylon’s eventual destruction of Jerusalem, followed by restoration

  7. Isaiah: key verse “For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up – and it shall be brought low.” - Isaiah 2:12
