On average it takes 6 years to complete (that’s more than the average at a four-year university)! It is a general education. Some Junior Colleges also offer certifications...which are different from an Associate’s Degree.

  13. Scenarios (5) • Number 1 Giovanni is a high school drop-out. When he was 17 he became fatally ill and found himself in the hospital for 2 years in order to receive treatment. All of his physical and mental strength was allocated to ensure that he was able to push through. Fortunately, Gio made it but he had fallen behind in school. When he was finally released to return to school he was 19 and all of his friends had graduated from high school. While he was receiving treatment he was inspired by those who cared for him. They helped to treat him, feed him and even clean him. He was also amazed about how passionate some of the doctors were. Gio wants to dedicate the rest of his life to research and discovering more about the disease that caused him to fall ill. What path of degrees will Gio need to take in order to achieve his dream of conducting research in a lab setting?

  14. Scenarios (5) • Number 2 Alyson spent some time in the juvenile detention center. Before being incarcerated, she was in and out of the foster care system. She traveled from home to home but was often mistreated by those around her. Her social worker, Janice, constantly assisted her in finding new homes. One time, Alyson was being abused by her foster parents and Janice removed her from the home. Alyson later ran away and attempted to drop out of school but Janice found her and encouraged her to continue her education. Although she was incarcerated and had many obstacles to overcome, Alyson managed to receive her high school diploma. As a senior in high school, Alyson realized the many great things that Janice had done for her. Janice never gave up on her and provided a leg of support when things got tough. Because of this experience, Alyson hopes to become a social worker in order to assist kids who are in the same situation that she was once in. What path of degrees should she take in order to reach her goal?

  15. Scenarios (5) • Number 3 Sam is unsure about what she wants to do…she recently graduated from high school and enjoys writing and science. She spent some time life guarding and she wanted to become an Emergency Medical Technician, but she often fainted at the sight of blood. However, she does enjoy writing. She is multi-faceted and has mastered creative writing, journalism and thesis formulation. She also loves working with young kids. As a student in high school she enjoyed reading a plethora of literature. She often escaped the world around her by diving into a good book and becoming a character, herself. What career and degree path would you recommend for her?

  16. Vocational Experiences (5) • Army, cosmetologist, cooking school… • These opportunities can be completed at a Trade School • Trade Schools teach the specific skills that you may need to enter into a specific field

  17. Exit Ticket (9) • Compare and contrast the following degrees: GED, diploma, and Associate’s degree • Write a paragraph (must be at least 10 lines) about some experiences that may have shaped your life.
