  1. Community Service Coordinator- ShameelaRajudin • Overseas School of Colombo • 2009--10 Community Service & CASAt OSC

  2. The Overseas School of Colombo has a long tradition of working with the local community through its service projects. It now runs a range of activities that help OSC students connect with local concerns in Colombo. The destructive December 26th Tsunami helped focus the work on relief and rehabilitation along affected coastlines.

  3. What is CAS ? • CAS stands for Creativity, Action and Service. • CAS is a term used in the IB Diploma Program for a wide range of extracurricular activities that are designed to balance academic classes and give IB Diploma students a well rounded education. • Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking. • Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing • academic work elsewhere in the Diploma Program. • Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the • student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected.

  4. MYP Community Service Expectations • MYP students are expected to participate in a service project for at least one semester of every year. This is especially important in the 10th grade in order to receive the MYP certificate. • Develop a community awareness and concern  • Develop a sense of responsibility • Develop the skills needed to make an effective contribution to society

Service Projects 2009-2010 • Project for the Rehabilitation Center for Communication Impaired (RCCI) • Cancer Hospital Project: Hope for Kids • Prison Babies Project • Sunflower Village Project • Temple School project • DAWG • Recycling & Sustainability project at OSC • Eco plus • SOS Orphanage • Sri Lanka Alzheimer Foundation • Habitat for Humanity • Library service

  6. The Rehabilitation Centre for the Communication Impaired RCCI community- based rehabilitation program where students interact and conduct weekly activities and fund raising.

  7. Prison Babies Students interact and organize activities for children in the Welikada Prison

  8. Cancer Hospital Students organizefund raising and activities for children in the Maharagama Cancer Ward

  9. Sunflower Village Project:Teaching Swimming to students from “Vidyawardene Govt. School”

  10. Temple School Project A temple school located close to OSC. Students carry outactivities for skill development ofthe pre-school children .

  11. DAWG (Dog Awareness & Welfare Group) Students to conduct awareness and sterilization camps for street dogs, organize fund raising for such programsand support the dog pound.

  12. Recycling & Campus Sustainability project at OSC This activity is working at reducing campus waste through the collection and sorting of recyclables on campus

  13. SOS Orphanage Students interact, organize activities and fund raise for children from the SOS village

  14. Sri Lanka Alzheimer Foundation Students create awareness and raise funds to buy medicines forelders homes.

  15. Habitat for Humanities Students participates in fund raising and help in the building process.

  17. Tsunami Projects • OSC has built 7 Pre school in Hambantota with aid from International donors • Currently working with 5 pre schools. • We provide classroom material and salaries to the teachers and their assistants. • WWW will focus on working with these schools on a rotation basis.

  18. Tsunami Projects… • OSC has continued to support two schools in Galle which is also part of the Tsunami project. • OSC also supported the building of a teacher training centre along with the IBO.

  19. Sharing Humanity “Our mission is to develop the whole person, emphasizing personal and academic excellence, tolerance and responsibility within the framework of a culturally diverse and internationally accredited school.”
