  1. April 16, 2013 (B Day) Agenda • DSJ #37 • Cardiovascular System – Part 2 (Notes) • Heart Diagram • DSR #37

  2. April 17, 2013 (A Day) Agenda • DSJ #37 • Cardiovascular System – Part 2 (Notes) • Heart Diagram • DSR #37

  3. DSJ #37 • Science Notebook – 13B • Prompt: Sammy is a 5 year-old little boy who is very curious about how the heart works. Explain to him (in 5 sentences or more) what it does and why it is very important to the body. Remember, he is only 5, so use words that he can understand.

  4. Cardiovascular system – part 2

  5. Learning Objective • Describe the functions and structures of arteries, capillaries, and veins.

  6. Arteries • 13. The walls of arteries are generally very thick. Artery consist of up to three layers.

  7. Arteries • 14. Arteries carry blood away from the heart.

  8. Arteries • 15. Coronary arteries carry blood to the heart itself.

  9. Arteries • 16. • By taking your pulse rate, you can determine how fast your heart is beating. • Your pulse is caused by the alternating expansion and relaxation of the artery wall. • When you count the number of times an artery pulses, you are counting heartbeats. • When your heart contracts, it sends a spurt of blood through all the arteries in your body.

  10. Arteries • 17. The layer of muscle in an artery acts as a control gate, adjusting the amount of blood sent to different organs.

  11. Capillaries • Compared to arteries, the walls of capillaries are only one cell thick.

  12. Capillaries • 18. In the capillaries, materials are exchanged between the blood and the body’s cells.

  13. Capillaries • 19. One way that materials are exchanged between the blood and body cells is by diffusion.

  14. Veins • 20. Veins carry blood back to the heart.

  15. Veins • 21. There are three things that help push blood through veins.

  16. Veins • 21. There are three things that help push blood through veins. • a. The contraction of skeletal muscles.

  17. Veins • 21. • b. The valves in larger veins prevent backflow of blood.

  18. Veins • 21. • b. The valves in larger veins prevent backflow of blood. • c. Breathing movements force blood toward the heart.

  19. Veins • 22. The walls of veins, like those of arteries, have three layers. But unlike arteries, the walls of veins are generally much thinner.

  20. Artery and Vein • In this photo, you can compare the wall of an artery with the wall of a vein.

  21. Blood Pressure • 23. Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the blood vessels.

  22. Blood Pressure • 23. Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the blood vessels. • 24. As blood moves away from the heart, blood pressure decreases.

  23. Blood Pressure • 23. Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the blood vessels. • 24. As blood moves away from the heart, blood pressure decreases. • 25. When you go to the doctor’s office, your blood pressure is measured by an instrument called a sphygmomanometer. (sfigmohmuh NAHM uh tur)

  24. Heart Diagram • Directions: • Turn to page 554 of your textbook. • Draw the valve in the appropriate place. • Color your diagram in the same way. • Draw the arrows showing the direction of blood flow. • Include all labels, but not the descriptions of the labels. • Glue into your notebook when finished.

  25. DSR #37 • Science Notebook – 13B (Under DSJ #37) • Prompt: What do arteries do? What happens in capillaries? What job do veins have?
